Obituary of Joyce Cogswell
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life…and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” John 11:25,26.
This temporary earthly life ended for Joyce on March 10, 2025. By faith and the mercy and love of God, she now lives in His presence forever.
Born in Ripples, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of George St. Clair Young and Gordena Mae Young (Green). Predeceased by her parents, sister Glenna J. Young (d. 2017) and brother-in-law Captain William Bassett (d. 2024), she is survived by her sister Linda M. Young and several cousins.
Married to Howard Leon Cogswell in 1960, they shared a loving, challenging, enriching and productive life for nearly 59 years, until Howard’s death in 2019.
Always maintaining a desire to learn, Joyce took advantage of many opportunities to nourish her desire. A Registered Nurse, she interspersed her Operating Room work with periods of study (University of Toronto; UNBSJ), teaching and office work.
Joyce shared her OR training and experience when she joined a church-related short-term surgical team, helping with various surgical procedures in the hospital in LaGonave, Haiti.
She successfully completed the demanding Halifax International Language Institute course, earning her Certificate for teaching English as a Second Language in China. She and Howard lived and worked in China and in Hong Kong on three separate occasions.
Joyce credited these “character-building” out-of-country experiences for her broadened world view, her interest in all cultures, and her appreciation for her home country, Canada.
As a Christian, Joyce was active in her church, volunteering in several capacities. Music played an important part in her life. She was privileged to participate in many different choirs.
It was her prayer that the life of someone, somewhere, was enriched because their life merged with hers for a time on the journey of life.
