Joyce Makarowski (née Brown) passed away peacefully at home, just the way she wanted to, after a short battle with cancer on January 23, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83 years old.
Joyce was a woman of remarkable spirit and a love for exploration. Her adventurous travels took her across the globe, including various European countries like Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey and Russia, and throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. One of Joyce’s most cherished adventures was a road trip on the Alaska Highway with Russel, embarking from Edmonton and traversing the Yukon Territory, culminating in the city of Fairbanks, Alaska.
A natural leader, Joyce played a pivotal role in creating the Twin Brooks Community Garden in south Edmonton. She was also a past president of the Catholic Women’s League. Her dedication to service extended beyond these roles, as she volunteered for ten years at the Anawim food bank.
Joyce’s positive outlook, easy laughter, and generosity were hallmarks of her personality. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 58 years, Russel; their son, Brian (Diana); daughter, Denise (James); and her grandchildren: Tara, Nicole, Savannah, Alexander (AJ), and Carson. She also leaves behind her siblings: Betty McGrath, Joanne (Gérald) Boudreau, Allen (Dora) Brown, Gloria (Mario) Brown, Catherine (Bernard) Brown-Roy, and Patricia Brown-Amirault; as well as her aunt, Madeleine, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, William G. and Loretta Brown; her sister, Florence (who passed away in infancy); brother, William (Billy); half-brother, Robert; and brother-in-law, Percy.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the physicians and nurses at Grey Nuns Hospital, who provided exceptional care during Joyce’s surgeries and recoveries. They are also grateful to the compassionate home care professionals from Palliative Care and Bayshore who brought laughter and dignity to Joyce’s final months at home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church (210 Haddow Close NW, Edmonton, AB) at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes can be made to Joyce’s favourite charity, Chalice.
