Joyce Gundy died peacefully at the Toronto General Hospital on Sunday, March 09, 2025, 94 years of age.
She was pre-deceased by her sister Carolyn Gundy and her father, Henry Pearson Gundy.
She taught at the Royal Conservatory of Music, the University Settlement, and the Toronto School for Strings and Piano.
Joyce was honored by the Royal Conservatory with the prestigious and well-earned Legacy Examiner Award for her many years of dedicated service.
Hundreds of fortunate RCM exam candidates received beautifully written, thoughtful and encouraging adjudications from her, over many years.
As a violin teacher she trained violin and viola students, often accompanying them at the piano. Some became members of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and went on to careers as professional musicians.
She made the musical education of her students a meaningful, joyful experience.
She conducted the University Settlement String Orchestra for many years, with many memorable performances.
Special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Toronto General and the Toronto Western Hospital who provided excellent care in her time of need.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Toronto Humane Society, or to St. Matthew’s Bracondale House where Joyce lived, with safety, comfort and dignity. smbh.ca/donors
