Suddenly at the
Moncton hospital on 19 February 2025.
Joy Estelle (Denton)
Pyper was born in Yorkshire, England, daughter of John Denton and
Gertrude Coull Ritchie. She is survived by her only sister,
Una Pugh and her daughter, Kathleen (Gerald Buffington).
Also by her grandchildren, Shawn (Nancy Michaud) and children,
Katrina, Jackson, Sasha & Nathan; Eric (MaryBeth Chudleigh)
and children, EmmaLeigh (Nolan Beck), Jacob, Matthew, &
Andrew; Krystal (Carl Brook) and children William & Thomas;
Brian (Nicole Anderson) and children Andrea, Kev, &
Holly. Also survived by her special nephew, who was more
like her brother, John (Jed) Denton, and other nieces and
nephews.
Joy emigrated to
Canada in December 1949 with her parents and sister. After
the war torn life of WWII in England, they sought a better life in
Canada. They found a new home near Smiths Falls, Ontario,
and the family lived most of their life in the surrounding
area. Joy attended Teacher’s College in Ottawa and
afterwards taught in one-room schoolhouses. After
a brief marriage, she, with the help of her parents, raised her
daughter as a single parent. When she could no longer find
work as a teacher, she became an employee of Digital Equipment where
she worked until downsizing forced her into early
retirement.
She volunteered a
great deal of her time to Holy Trinity Anglican church in Lombardy,
where she lived until she suffered a stroke and subsequent heart
issues. After heart surgery reduced her abilities, she lived
with her daughter. In 2021, she moved to Elgin, New
Brunswick with Kathy & Gerald to begin a new adventure in New
Brunswick. The last 2 months of her life, she spent as a
resident of Jordan Lifecare Centre, making new friends, playing
cribbage, and attending activities. Joy enjoyed a long life,
and was nicknamed by some of her closer friends “Joyful” due
to her cheerful countenance. She will be missed by her
daughter, devoted son-in-law, grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Jackson, especially,
will miss teasing his “Gran
Joy”. And “the heir” (you
know who you are), will miss making her peppermint tea and trying to
pass it off as the real thing.
As previously
arranged, she has been cremated and her remains will be interred at
Holy Trinity Anglican in Lombardy, Ontario beside her
mother.
Kathleen extends her
thanks to the amazing doctor & nurses who attended her mother
in her last hours at the Trauma unit of the Moncton
hospital.
