Josephine (Jo) Burt, 73, of Trenton, Nova Scotia passed away on March 7, 2025 at Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
Jo was born in Avondale, Newfoundland to Frank and Elizabeth Grace on August 12, 1951. She graduated from Roncalli High School and lived in Ontario for a few years. In 1973, she moved to Labrador City, Newfoundland where she began her career as a labourer and equipment attendant at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC). She met her husband-to be, Roland, in 1974 (who also worked at IOCC): they married in 1975 and they later gave birth to their daughter, Jo-Anne (named after Jo and her mother), in 1982. Jo retired from IOCC in 2003 and lived in Trenton, Nova Scotia. She volunteered at the Aberdeen Hospital for several years until she transitioned to Glen Haven Manor in 2021.
Jo is survived by her husband (Roland Burt) and daughter (Jo-Anne Burt and her husband Gregory Spidle); her siblings Madeline Hoffer, Patrick Grace, Patricia (and her husband Nick) Dalton, Donna Ballard, Kathleen (and her husband Robert) Johansson; sister-in-law Theresa Grace; her sibling’s children (her nieces and nephews) Mona Mast, Sheila Bowling, Robert Hoffer, Carla Ostrand, Jeannie Snow, Fabian Dalton, Jamie Grace, Bernie-Ann Ezekiel, Morgan Grace, and Karla Grace; and many siblings-in-law, nieces and nephews in-law, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bernard (Ben) Grace, and her sister-in-law Sandra Horrigan.
It’s hard to find the words to summarise what a wonderful person Jo was. She was an unwavering bright light through all seasons of life. Jo was always there, through the joys and sorrows of life, and she demonstrated a deep an unwavering commitment to those she loved. She was warm, she radiated kindness and affection, and had the gift of making others feel cared for and appreciated. She was compassionate, always ready to offer comfort and support, and deeply caring. She paid attention to the little details that made a big difference. She was generous and freely gave her time, attention, and love to others. She was understanding and would listen without judgement with a kind smile and a sympathetic ear.
Those who knew Jo knew that she was witty; her clever comments and observations always kept others on their toes and laughing. She had a knack for making even mundane situations fun and loved to make others smile.
Throughout her life, Jo held many interests. She was always active – like a tiny hummingbird – and kept busy with crafts (knitting, sewing, acyclic Bob Ross-like painting, and wood painting), daily walks, and gardening. Her gardens reflected the time and love she poured into creating and maintaining them: they were beautiful. She was always singing and liked to create silly little songs about silly little things. She loved bird-watching, and animals in general, and cherished her fur-grandchildren Frankie (the littlest darling, deceased), Charlie (deceased), Cooper, and Bear.
Jo also loved to travel and spent time visiting parts of Canada, the US, and overseas. Her heart, however, remained in her home of Newfoundland and she was often known to tell stories of her adventures in the province, to sing parts of Newfoundland songs, and to make Newfoundland foods (especially dressing and different cakes). One thing many cherished about Jo was her tendency to drop Newfoundland sayings into conversation: the phrase “some day on clothes” (meaning it was a breezy and sunny day) and the word “mauzy” (used to describe muggy weather) were particularly common.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the caring staff at Glen Haven Manor (especially Shania and Lisa), to Tammy and Brian Newell (our wonderful neighbours), and to Jane Fraiser and Pauline Johnson (dear friends).
