It is with deep sadness that we announce that Professor
Joseph Wilkie Darismé, 81 years old, passed away peacefully
on January 6, 2025, at the Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital
Centre. Born in Arcahaie, Haiti, he was the son of Amila
Darismé.
Wilkie Darismé was known for his boundless
generosity, his great intelligence, his curiosity about everything,
and his unconditional love for his family. His laughter, joie de vivre
and profound humanity will remain etched in our hearts. He leaves a
legacy of love, wisdom and lasting memories.
He began his studies in Puerto Rico before earning a Master’s
degree at Université Laval. In 1984, he completed his
doctorate in the sociology of economic development at George
Washington University. During his long career, he was a professor and
researcher at the Université de Moncton’s School of Social
Work, where he also held the position of Director for several years.
He was also deeply involved in the ABPPUM (Association des
bibliothécaires et professeures-professeurs de
l’Université de Moncton). He left a lasting impression on
his colleagues and students through his attentiveness, kindness,
critical spirit, commitment and passion for teaching.
He is survived by his two children: Patrice
Darismé of California and Amila Landry-Darismé
of Dieppe (Gabriel Long); his children’s mothers,
Réjeanne Landry and Micheline Beaudry; his grandchildren:
Tyler and Gabrielle Darismé; brother and sister: Lesly
Templier and Margareth ”Maggie” Thermitus; aunts: Marie-Jeanne
Dalusmé (husband Jean Alexandre) and Chimène
Darismé; cousins, in particular Marie Roussette, Aly
Alexandre and Émilie Darismé; nephews and nieces
including Anderson, Hébert, Jeffrey, Whitney, Kellie,
Lookens, Junia, Cindy, as well as the Darismé, Alexandre,
Templier, Landry, Beaudry, Polinyce-Thébaud and Rancy
families.
Professor Darismé is also survived by many close
friends, his colleagues and friends at the Université de
Moncton, and the Greater Moncton Haitian community.
He is predeceased by his two brothers: Anthony Templier (wife
Nicole Templier) and Robert Templier.
In this time of mourning, we invite all those who knew and
loved Professor Wilkie Darismé to join us in celebrating
his life on Friday, January 10, from 2 to 4 pm, with a sharing of
memories at 3:30 pm at Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, 88
Church Street, Moncton (560-858-1900).
