Obituary of John Richard Mayes
It is with great sadness that the family of John Richard Mayes of Grand Bay-Westfield announces his passing, which occurred on January 10, 2025. He was the son of the late Roy and Annie (Paisley) Mayes.
John was born on September 9, 1947 in Queenstown, NB where he was raised and attended school. Later, he graduated from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, NS with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and the following year he received his Bachelor of Education from the University of New Brunswick.
Following graduation, John started working at NBTel in Saint John as Public Relations Officer and a few years later went to work at Canada Post as the Real Property Manager for the Atlantic Provinces.
In the early years, John had a passion for boating, snowmobiling and riding his Harley Davidson. He also had many talents including piano and carpentry. Once his girls came along, he enjoyed many summers camping, gardening, shining and cruising around in his cherry red convertible mustang, “The Bold 1”.
John (fondly referred to in his younger years as Jack) and his wife, Carol Elizabeth (Wall) Mayes just recently celebrated 53 years of marriage.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Arthur William Mayes.
Along with his wife, John is survived by daughters, Angela Ruth Mayes (Nicolas Bastien) and Julie Elizabeth Morrison (Robert McFadden) and five grandsons. Tomas, Leopold and Louie Bastien; and James and Noah Morrison and their father, John Morrison. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Barbara Colpitts Ramallo and Rowena Mayes; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
You could always count on John to have the right tool for the job and to lend a helping hand in the neighborhood.
John’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Carleton Kirk Lodge for their loving care towards John.
As per John’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date along with the interment in St. Stephen Anglican Church Cemetery, Queenstown, NB.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to Diabetes Canada or Epilepsy Canada.
