Obituary of John Edward Murphy
MURPHY, John “Jack” Edward – Age 75, of Conquerall Mills, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Jack was an educator and coach with a distinguished 35-year career in the Lunenburg county school system. His teaching days began in Mahone Bay in 1969; he then taught at Bridgewater High and later at Parkview Education Centre, where he retired in 2004. He was also a former member and Warden for St. James’ Anglican Church, Conquerall Mills.
Throughout his career “Murph” reached countless students and athletes in the province and had a positive impact on shaping the lives of many. He always had fond memories and entertaining stories to tell of the adventures along the way. He felt it was a privilege to be able to be a part of the lives of young people, even if he made just a small impression on them. The teaching didn’t stop when he left the school. His generosity expanded as he would open his home and he would spend hours in the boat on his beloved Fancy Lake going around and around with patience to pass on the art of waterskiing to so many. Not only was he a hardworking and dedicated coach, Jack was a mentor to some, a great friend to many near and far, a devoted and protective husband and best dad ever.
Some of Jack’s accomplishments for which he and his family are very proud include the following: Co-founder of the New Year’s Classic basketball tournament 1972; president of Basketball Nova Scotia, 1978; Provincial “AA” boys basketball champions Bridgewater High, 1981 & 1983; co-founder of Park View Panther Fever Weekend basketball tournament, 1985; Provincial “AAA” boys basketball champions PVEC, 1990; Nova Scotia Canada Games Junior men’s basketball program, coach 1991-1993; Nova Scotia School Athletic Association “Hugh A. Noble” Distinguished Service award 2013-2014; Basketball Nova Scotia “Frank Baldwin” award for his dedication to building the sport of basketball 2017. Most recently, in 2023, Jack was inducted into the Lunenburg County Sport Heritage Wall of Fame as a Builder, for his dedication to sport and influential leadership in the sport of basketball.
Jack’s passion for sport and competition was evident by all those he coached and by spectators in the stands, he was fun to watch. The loss of Jack is felt deeply by his family, friends, former students-athletes, and the community. The kind words and stories people have shared about his impact brings comfort to those who knew and loved him.
Surviving is his loving and dedicated wife of 55 years, Linda Mae (Nowe) Murphy, Conquerall Mills, who he fondly called “Mom”; his children, Jaye Murphy (Paula Robbins), Halifax; and Nadia Murphy (Jeff Cross), Kentville; brothers, Carroll Fancy and Samuel Fancy, both of Hebbville; John (Cheryl) Fancy, Conquerall Mills; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his birth mother, Helen; his parents Clayton and Ina Fancy, formerly of Hebbville, who lovingly raised Jack from the age of 4; and a sister, Elaine Eagle.
A celebration of Jack’s life will be arranged for later in the spring. Details will be published when finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice, but more importantly take some time to spend with the young people in your life and encourage them to be the best people they can be.
Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, where on-line condolences and messages may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
