Surrounded by family, John Russell of Walkerton passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Hanover & District Hospital in his 79th year. Beloved and dedicated father to Vanessa (Jamie) Morrison of Collingwood, Tania of Walkerton, Judd (Kerigin) of Kinloss, and Bethany of Listowel. Adored Opa to Callie, Sadie, Winnie, Ryker, and Amalia. John will be missed dearly by his sister Margaret Hoffmann of Kitchener. Predeceased by his parents Henry and Herta Russell, brother-in-law Dieter Hoffmann, and nephew Jimmy Hoffmann.
Born in Austria, John moved to Canada at the age of 5. He was a resilient man, who respected and valued honesty and integrity, and displayed those characteristics every day in both his work and family life.
After completing trade school, John pursued a career in carpentry and ambitiously started his own General Contracting company, Pyramid Building Systems. For nearly 40 years he dedicated his skills to designing and building agricultural and commercial buildings across Ontario.
A country boy at heart, John took immense pride in his home and farm property and would often be found driving one of his many ‘toys’. From the Oliver, four-wheeler, International truck or his trusty Ford; in the bush cutting wood, in the field, or manicuring the lawn (often a little too close to the pond!), when he was outdoors, there was a motor running, and a smile on his face.
Humble and quietly accomplished, John’s greatest pride was his family. He instilled in his children the values of hard work, independence, and valuable life skills – his guidance, wisdom, and unmeasurable strength will forever be missed.
Dad, you were a force to be reckoned with – strong, determined and deeply loved. Thank you for your unwavering and unconditional love. You are forever in our hearts.
Friends and relatives are invited to visitation from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p. m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hanover. Reception to follow.
Interment in Hanover Cemetery.
