John Peter Phillips
October 26th 1946 – April 5th 2025
John passed away surrounded by his family at Douglas Memorial Hospital, on Saturday April 5th, 2025. John is predeceased by his parents Karl and Tina Phillips (nee Cognigni), and grandson Cole Doneff. John will be greatly missed by his daughter Krista and son in law Erik Martin, his granddaughter Jordyn (Kody) and two great-grandsons Bodie and Miles, as well as his brother Ed (Bill).
As a young man born and raised in Toronto, John led a charmed life. Good looking, athletic and smart, he breezed through his younger life successful at anything he felt deserved his attention. His early interest in sports teams and the likelihood of their success led to a fascination with probabilities and predictions. After short careers at the Universities of Waterloo and Ryerson (TMU), John decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and work for the Ontario Jockey Club in Toronto area racetracks and eventually in Fort Erie. This is where he met Mary (Passero) and soon after welcomed their daughter Krista.
John decided to settle down in Fort Erie with his new family and began working part time at Rosehill Auction House in the 70’s. As his love for horse racing grew, so did his career with the OJC. After he and Mary parted ways, he dedicated himself to his daughter and his career. He worked his way through the Fort Erie racetrack in its hay days of the 80’s and 90’s, starting with the mutuals, money room and ending up as the Director of Operations. After being diagnosed with spinal stenosis, John retired and spent the last 20 years of his life watching horse racing, handicapping and enjoying his family.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at GNGH for keeping him comfortable and a very special thank you to Nicole, Dr. Marchi and Dr. Scher.
After cremation, an interment will take place at a later date. Benner Funeral Services has been entrusted with arrangements.
