It is with great sadness that we are saying our final goodbye to John Albert McCurdy, born in Simcoe, Ontario on January 27th, 1945. John died very peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 13th in Owen Sound, just shy of his 80th birthday. He will be forever missed by his family: wife Sandra Lynn (married 56 years), sons Chris (Salina) and Jay (Katharine), and grandchildren Rowen, Jillian and Brenden. John is also survived by his brother, Robin (Marg).
After working tirelessly for 40 years as a technician for National Cash Register in Chatham, John ‘retired’ to his roots on the Bruce Peninsula in 2004 in Hope Bay, where he and Lynn ran Cedarholme Bed and Breakfast for 18 years. It took a severe stroke in 2022 to finally slow John down and embrace actual retirement.
John was one-of-a-kind on many levels. Known for his prickly passion, strong headed will, and limitless curiosity, he lived an energetic and determined life. After tearing apart his 1st car engine and rebuilding it at the age of 15, John never looked back, and never stopped moving. His sharp mind and busy body led him to pursue many hobbies in his lifetime: including driving a stock car as a newlywed, becoming a private pilot, and constantly refining his trade skills in the ‘shop’ (carpentry, welding, and electronics to name a few). There seemed nothing that Johnny couldn’t fix or build- truly a 20th century Renaissance man, but also an old pioneer at heart.
In his downtime, John very much enjoyed some simple pleasures such as great food, good movies, a glass of Guinness and roaring bon fire (typically followed by ‘late-night snacks’ for everyone). He often presented as an introvert, but always defaulted to his softer side offering his friendship, companionship and a helping hand to anyone who discovered his generosity. John was also known for his trademark laugh and smile. Most importantly, John was an amazing protector and provider for his family who always came first to him- he was a loving husband, wonderful father and a super fun grandpa.
John’s body will be returned to the earth with his ashes being spread in Lion’s Head. A small Celebration of Life will take place in the spring. His memory will live on in all those who crossed paths with him in this life. May you rest in peace Johnny.
