It is with regret that we inform you of the passing of John Leslie Eric Kivioja. Born July 30, 1963, John died on Monday, April 14, 2025. John is predeceased by his father, Urho and his mother, Taimi Kivioja, as well as his brother, Oliver and his nephew, Ken Mattinen.
John is survived by his brothers and sisters Kauno (Susan), Viola (Ron), and Diane. As well, he leaves behind nephews and nieces Mike, David, Kara, Kelly, Larry, Allan, and Glen as well as many cherished great nephews & nieces.
John was a loyal staff member of District School Board Ontario Northeast, and he retired after almost 30 years of service working at a number of different schools, the last one being TH&VS. His career in janitorial services began at the old K-Mart department store in 1992.
John moved to Schumacher in 1973 with his parents. He attended Schumacher Public school and moved on to Roland Michener Secondary High School where he graduated from grade 12.
John was a popular figure in the community over the years. He prided himself as a Goal-Judge at the McIntyre Arena for the Timmins North Stars. He was a wonderful friend and neighbour, and he often helped his senior neighbours with grass cutting in summer and snow blowing in winter. For many years, he would meet with a small crew of women friends from work who he would pick-up and drive home every day. John was affable and friendly, and when he would see someone who he knew in the community, he would not hesitate to stop and talk and share a good laugh.
More recently, John moved into the Spruce Hill Lodge where he was treated with kindness and respect from a wonderful staff. We are grateful to all of the caregivers for the wonderful attention they afforded John, particularly in the end.
Our thanks also go out to the doctors and nurses at the Timmins and District Hospital for the medical treatment and care of John in his last days.
A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday April 21, 2025, at 12pm. A light lunch will be served in the Lessard Reception Centre after the memorial service with the family present. The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:30am to 12pm at LESSARD Funeral and Cremation Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Timmins Finnish Seniors Home or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
