SANGERS, Johannes (John) – With heavy hearts, we share the passing of John Sangers, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Born in the Netherlands January 4, 1933, John travelled to Canada in 1954. He lived in Nova Scotia before moving to Ontario where he met Rina (née DeBeyer) at the Dutch dance in London. They married on November 7 1959. They moved to Ayr in 1963 and raised 8 children on the family dairy farm where his family learned to work hard and enjoy life. They then lived in the town of Ayr for 26 years. John and Rina lived the last 2 years at Riverbend Place in Cambridge where he received excellent care.
John will be missed by his wife Rina, his children Elizabeth Hicks (Dave), Gerald Sangers (Kris), Peter Sangers (Theresa Kusch), John Sangers (Crystal), Robert Sangers (Valerie Lessard), Wilma Vannatter (Jeff), Catharine Sangers (Bob Snell), and Mary Leggett (Cory Dominix), and his 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
John will be remembered for riding around town on his electric bike or his scooter. He always enjoyed a game of cards and playing his harmonica. He gave us all nicknames. He was always ready to throw you a mint candy or a peanut from his pocket. He travelled and enjoyed a good visit with family and life-long friends. He measured his success in life so simply; a happy family and “having enough money for an ice cream”. He didn’t ever say good-bye. Instead, he said “See you in the movies!”
John is survived by his sister, Nell van den Ouderrijn of Holland. He was predeceased by his parents, Gert and Wilhelmina (nee DeGraaff) Sangers, and his siblings: Herman (Corrie) Sangers, Annie (Jan) Sluis, Piet (Mien) Sangers, Gert (Bep) Sangers, Corrie (Wim) Steenkamp and Adrie Sangers.
Dad/Opa/Great Opa, we thank you for everything. We love you. We will miss you and now we will “see YOU in the movies”
Family and friends are invited to visitation, held at Kipp Funeral Home in Ayr Chapel, 183 Northumberland St. Ayr, on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St Brigid Roman Catholic Community Church 50 Manley St. Ayr, on Friday, Feb 21, at 11 a.m.
