Jack Burke, has led a diverse life over the years. A New Brunswick native, Burke was a professional “Bantam Weight” boxer from 1961 to 1972, holding the title of “Canadian Champion” in the last seven years of his “fighting” career. Burke “retired the gloves” to pursue several careers – he worked as a stationary engineer, draftsman and estimator. With a life-long interest in Art, he found his niche managing the screen printing division of an offset and silk screen printing company.
Eventually, Jack decided to hone his skills as a craftsman; he began carving decoys but found the task too time-consuming. An interest in working with clay developed after researching the subject at the library. So inspired was Burke that he built himself a kick wheel, and dug clay from his own backyard – such were the beginnings of Burke Pottery.
Burke became a juried member of the New Brunswick Crafts Council in the fall of 1988. He participated in numerous craft shows across the Maritimes. His studio was located at Bayswater, Kingston Peninsula.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (506-646-2424). A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date.
Donations in Jack’s memory may be made to Romero House or a charity of the donor’s choice.
