John Granberg
August 1, 1936 – February 18, 2025
It is with heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of John Granberg on February 18th, 2025, at his home in Saskatoon.
John was born in Canwood, Saskatchewan, on August 1st, 1936, to Paulina (Tegenfeldt) Granberg and Olov Granberg. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and dear friend to many, John was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
John spent his early years on the family farm in Polworth with his parents, four brothers, and three sisters. From a young age, he was a dedicated and hardworking man, whether tending to the farm, working as a school janitor, or assisting his older brother Karl with breaking land and threshing crews. He also spent two winters in logging camps before beginning his long career with the Canadian National Railway in 1955. His work with the railway took him across Canada, and he remained with CNR until his retirement in 1989.
Even after retiring, John’s passion for railways continued. He worked as a consultant for Harsco Rail, which took him to Italy and South Carolina, where he trained on his favorite rail maintenance machine, the P8-11. His expertise led to contracts to put eight P8-11s into service in India and another in Japan.
In retirement, John and his wife Joyce built their home at Little Amyot Lake, where he enjoyed gardening, being in the bush cutting wood, repairing any machine possible, sharing stories, and welcoming family and friends into his home. They lived there until 2022, when they moved back to Saskatoon to be closer to family.
John took immense pride in his family and never missed an opportunity to remind them how much they meant to him. His warmth, work ethic, and storytelling will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia and Myrna (Martin); his granddaughters, Jamie (Tyler) and their children, Axel and Lucy; Leslie (Landon) and their children, Brooks and Sophie; and Lain (Matthew). He is also survived by his brother, Sten (Violet); his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne (Yvonne) Pearson and Reta (Dennis) Anderson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his loving wife, Joyce Olive, and his beloved son, Norman Wayne, along with his parents, siblings, in-laws, and several siblings-in-law.
He will be remembered for his wonderful stories, quick wit, and warm heart. We love you, John, and will miss you always.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ali Rajput Endowment for Parkinson’s Disease. A celebration of life for both John and Joyce will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Canwood Elks Hall.
