John Conrad Sampson
Howie Centre
With shattered hearts we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend of many, John Conrad Sampson of Tometary Drive, Howie Centre, on Monday, February 17, 2025, at the age of 70 years.
Formerly from the Hardwood Hill area of Sydney, John was the son of the late John Dan and Conradine Sampson.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen (Bates) Sampson and his twin daughters, Alicia (Liam) Hussey and Alana Sampson and their children, Eben, Piper and Albie, as well as four loving stepdaughters, Shelley (Craig) Lynk, Jennifer (Chris) Skinner, Sara (Jason) Beers and Ashley (Kevin) Adams and their children, Bryan, Andrew, Isabelle, Ben, Max, Ellie and Jake. John is also survived by his sisters, Rosalind (Stewart) Setchell and Marianne (Brian) Heaslip; brothers, Francis Donovan and Billy Jessome; his fur baby, Cruz who he adored; along with several brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.
He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Heather Cooke; first wife, Stella (Gaslard) Sampson; and nephew, John Cooke.
As a young man John worked at the bus company and later took immense pride serving as a Firefighter with Sydney Station 1. His kind heart and gentle spirit helped many during his career as a first responder where his compassion and deep sense of caring eased the distress of those involved. Despite retiring in 2009 John remained active in the Sydney Regional Fire Services Association, the call toward duty and service ever present throughout his life.
Taking great care of another love in his life, his Volkswagen, he always kept it shining! He looked forward to going for drives with Mary and was always willing and ready to pick anyone up and take them wherever they needed to go. John was the best kind of friend, loyal and steadfast. His kind and caring nature drew people to him, and he was called a friend by all who knew him.
John held a special love for his twins, Alicia and Alana, his pride and joy. There was nothing in the world John wouldn’t do for them. Whether to offer a supportive ear, a word of sage advice, lend a helping hand, or even special delivery of a favorite food, John was unwavering in his devotion; a pillar who held a sacred place in their lives. The passage of time from their childhood to becoming mothers themselves did not diminish John’s presence in their lives but strengthened it. A wonderful father, despite distance and time, he was an equally involved and loving Papa to all his grandkids. Often telling jokes, teaching them little tricks, and talking about the bigger lessons in life, time with Papa was cherished. For his entire life, John’s family meant everything to him.
Visitation for John will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, February 23rd from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Sydney River on Monday, February 24th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Conrad Edwards officiating, reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or to a charity of your choice.
