Beloved brother of Susan (Keith) Howard of Lacombe, AB, Eric of Kitchener, Paul (Deb) Martin of St. Jacobs, Jean Swartzentruber (Merv Andrews) of Mount Forest, and Linda (Harry) Sahagian of Stouffville. Proud uncle to Anne (Zach) Frantz; Robin (Norbert) Pataki; Dan (Kit) Swartzentruber, Amanda Swartzentruber (Josh Pang); and Matthew Sahagian (Maia Kovacs).

Growing up John worked on the farm, and was actively involved with his family, community, and local sports. He was a beloved coach for ringette teams in St. Jacobs with his sister Linda, with the team calling him ‘Chobbles’. He spent years refereeing ringette as well.
He also spent years playing soccer with his brother Paul and the Camels. He always looked forward to seeing his family at the yearly reunion – the White Whoopee. John has spent much of his life on the road, driving and operating trucks, and was often seen on his motorcycle, from short afternoon rides to long trips with friends and family.
