John “Chic” Leslie Thomson Obituary
John “Chic” Leslie Thomson passed away peacefully at Alexander Place in Waterdown on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at the age of 93. Beloved brother of Dorothy Thomson. Predeceased by his siblings Marjorie Shakespeare, Bill Thomson, Donald “Pete” Thomson, Kathleen “Cass” Thomson, Robert “Bob” Thomson, and Margaret “Teen” Syvret. Chic was a cherished uncle who adored his nieces and nephews, always cheering them on in their sporting endeavours.
A hardworking and well-loved member of his community, Chic wore many hats throughout his life. He began his career as a “butcher” at Huxley’s before owning the Highway Market in Binbrook, Ontario. He then became the co-owner of the Waterdown Bowling Alley alongside Woody Held, a venture he enjoyed for nearly 30 years. Later, he found his true passion in the furniture business. Chic first worked alongside Gary and Walter Ribson at Walo Furniture, where he discovered his love for the industry. He later opened R and T Furniture with Gary and the support of his friend Larry Vernon. After Gary’s passing in 1993, friend Ron Paddock became involved in the business successfully running it with Chic until he decided to retire in 2002.
Chic had a love for sports, especially the Toronto Blue Jays, golf, and hockey. His adventurous spirit led him on many road trips south of the border with his brother Bob, always in search of the best places to share a meal— in true Thomson fashion, good food was just as important as the journey itself. A true hockey enthusiast, he fulfilled a lifelong dream in 1972 when he travelled to Russia to witness Team Canada take on the Soviets.
Above all, Chic will be remembered for his big heart, warm smile, and unwavering generosity. He was a friend to many and a source of joy to all who knew him. The staff at Alexander Place, who affectionately called him “Papa Chic” provided him with over five years of loving care, for which his family is deeply grateful.
A private celebration of Chic’s life will be held at Kitching Steepe & Ludwig Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mission Services of Hamilton and the Salvation Army, two organizations close to Chic’s heart, would be appreciated by the family.
Forever in our hearts, Chic’s kindness and laughter will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
