Leaving to mourn wife Joan of 48 years, his 2 sons Greg (Sarah), Joseph and grandson John who was the apple of his eye.
John was first and foremost a family man who always put his first and was proud and loved being a husband, father and grandfather.
John’s career was also his passion. John worked in radio broadcasting industry for over 50 years, 30 of which he was the general manager of VOCM. John’s passion for radio took VOCM to the number one spot in the ratings for many years, an accomplishment he was very proud of.
Besides a very lengthy and successful radio career, John was also very active in the community. John served a chair of The VOCM Cares Foundation, The Boys and Girls Club, The Canadian Liason Council, The Army and Air Cadets as well as the Lion’s Club where he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedication and humanitarian services. John was also key in the building and existence of the Admiralty House Communications Museum in Mount Pearl.
Another accolade John was very proud of was being inducted into Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association Hall of Fame in 2009. John spent numerous years in the play by play both calling senior hockey games across the province and even as far as the national level at the Allan Cup.
John will be fondly remembered for his deep and distinguished voice which was used in promos for the Newfoundland Edge basketball team, he was the voice of God for St. Peter’s Parish and if you ever travel on a ferry somewhere on the island you just might hear John’s voice giving out the safety instructions in case of an emergency.
John will be deeply missed but will always be remembered as the respectful man with the big voice but even bigger heart.
