Gysbers, Johanna Petronella (1926-2025)
Johanna passed away peacefully on April 4th, 2025, at Allendale Long-Term Care in Milton, Ontario, at the age of 98. Born in Breda, Netherlands, she immigrated to Canada in 1954 with her beloved husband, the late Jacobus (Jim) Gysbers.
A devoted mother, Johanna was deeply proud of her children, Andy (Wendy), Anita (Keith-John) and Ingrid (Nick). She was a cherished Oma to Nicholas, Lara, Simon, Alexandra, Catharina, and Samuel and a loving Groot Oma to Audrey, Wallace, Liet, Beorn, Ava, Elowen, Cooper and Noah. She was predeceased by her parents, Adrianus and Anna Catharina Peeters and all seven of her siblings- Jan, Kees, Frans, Nell, Luus, Engeline, and Rea- marking the passing of an era as the eldest and last surviving Peeters.
Johanna’s life was one of dedication, resilience, and service. She trained as a maternity nurse in the Netherlands before meeting Jim, whom she married after a whirlwind one-month courtship. Together, they built a life in Canada, settling in a farming community where Johanna embraced her roles as a devoted mother, homemaker, Girl Guide leader and active volunteer. A committed member of the Catholic Women’s League, she later worked as a nurse’s aide at Maple Manor Nursing Home.
Feisty, determined, hardworking, and full of humour, Johanna had a generous heart and a love for social gatherings, especially among her dear friends in the Dutch community. She remained sharp and active throughout her life, always ready to challenge anyone to a game of cards or Rummikub, even at 98. Her hands were never idle, crafting beautiful knitted and crocheted pieces that became treasured gifts for family and friends; creations she continued making even weeks before her passing.
The Gysbers family home in Brownsville was always filled with life, laughter, and countless celebrations. Johanna found joy in crafting, card games, and, most of all, in the company of loved ones. She drew deep strength from her faith, which sustained her through the years. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her warmth, spirit, and legacy of love will live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her.
The Gysbers family invites you to join them in honouring Johanna. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, April 10th, 2025, between 6:15 to 8:00 p.m. in the Maurice J.
