MEIER: JOHANNA “HANNY”
Johanna (Hanny) Meier formerly of East Wawanosh Township passed away at Huronlea Home for the Aged, on Monday March 17, 2025, in her 101st year.
Beloved wife of Fred Meier who predeceased her in 2018. Hanny was born on her parent’s farm in the hills of Oberalbis Switzerland on January 9,1925, to Hans and Marie (Jaggi) Kilchenmann. She lived a quiet farm life in Hausen am Albis in the Canton of Zurich with her 3 sisters and 1 brother. It was at a Red Cross Society meeting that she met Fred Meier. On February 13, 1954, she married Fred (Fritz) Meier and the immigrated to Canada to start a new life farming and raising a family. Hanny was the devoted mother of Fred and Linda Meier, Oscar and Mary Ann Meier, and Chris and Jane Meier.
She was the cherished grandmother of Heidi and David Laing, Laura and Greg Blackwell, Kerri Meier and Dave Bartman, Nicole and Pat Donnelly, Ryan and Christina Meier, Jeff and Amanda Meier, and Jason Meier and Emily Meier, and the treasured great grandma of 12. Hanny will also be remembered by her family in Switzerland, and her many friends and neighbours.
Hanny’s greatest love was her family, she was a kind and caring person, always thinking of others before herself. She loved the farm, living the simple life it brought. She worked right alongside her husband Fred helping milk the cows, unloading hay and making meals for all those that put in a hard day’s work. She took pride in her garden and many flowers and enjoyed watching the birds out of her front window. Hanny was an excellent cook, her grand-kids and great-grandkids especially loved her homemade Eierzuepfe and Spaetzle. Her unique Easter Eggs had become a family tradition that her grandkids always helped her with. Our family’s greatest treasure will, not only be the wonderful memories shared and good times we had, but the beautiful socks that she was always knitting for each and every one of us. If you were ever given a pair of these socks, you were without a doubt a very dear friend of Hanny.
Hanny was a longtime member of the Blyth United Church and the Blyth UCW. It was very hard for her to move to Huronlea in 2020, but it became her new home where she was treated with love and respect from the nurses and staff, which we are truly thankful for. We were very fortunate to celebrate her 100th birthday in January with a gathering of her family, friends, neighbours and the Swiss community.
Following Hanny’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral home visitation. A private family celebration will be held at Brandon Cemetery in Belgrave at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy the family would appreciate memorial donations to the Blyth United Church.
