Johann Koller Obituary
**Johann Emil Koller**
*August 30, 1937 – February 28, 2025*
John Koller passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, at the age of 87, after courageously enduring a long and difficult illness.
Born in Switzerland, John was the eldest of seven children. From a young age, he cultivated a deep love for the outdoors, paired with a passion for horticulture, music, and travel. In 1964, he immigrated to Vancouver, BC, Canada. During a return trip to Switzerland, he met his beloved wife, Trudi, at a dance. After three years of correspondence through letters, Trudi immigrated to Canada where they were blessed with three children and 46 wonderful years of marriage.
In 1979, John and Trudi moved to Smithers, BC, where they established a homestead, raised their family, and produced a thriving family business, nurturing and selling beautiful plants throughout the region. John’s life was marked by his tireless work ethic, adventure, curiosity, and creativity. His inventive mind was constantly brewing ideas for exciting projects, which he often brought to life with his own two hands. He particularly loved building rock walls and gardens. Above all, John cherished his family and grandchildren, delighting in creating joyful memories and fun experiences for them.
John’s dedication to the Bulkley Valley Swiss Club brought him immense joy and a sense of community, connecting him to his roots and enriching his life. His quick wit and laughter energized gatherings of all kinds.
A lifelong learner, he always had a stack of books he was reading and ideas he was eager to discuss. He often expressed that he was “born to make music and plant flowers.” In his later years, he shared his musical talents playing accordion as a member of the “Just Us” band, and found camaraderie in a weekly hiking club. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served in various capacities and appreciated tuning into church services from his bedside in his last days.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to their friends, neighbors, and caregivers for their unwavering support and kindness. Special thanks go to Dr. Eustace, Dr. Kruithof, the staff at Bulkley Lodge, and the caregivers at Smithers Hospital, whose care and compassion were a great comfort during the last five years of John’s illness.
John was predeceased by his wife, Trudi Koller, in 2013, his parents, Emil and Margrit Koller, and all six of his younger siblings. He is survived by his children, Angela; Renata and her husband, Paul Cooper, and their children, Lexi, Blake, and Chase of Calgary, AB; and Andy and his wife, Ingrid, and their children, Emily, Evan, Caleb, and Avery, also of Calgary, AB. A private burial service took place at Smithers Cemetery in early March. A celebration of life will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BV Health Foundation, Bulkley Lodge Fund.
