Joan Thomas
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Mom’s passing onto Glory! She was surrounded by her loving family after a short battle with cancer in her 89th year. Mom never thought she would live so long, but we are all grateful for the many memories she leaves behind. Mom was born Joan Louise Thomas in Toronto to her predeceased parents, Ralph Thomas and Marion Thomas (Nee: Foster) on July 3, 1936. She had two siblings who are also predeceased, her brother Gerald (Gerry) and younger sister, Gwen.
As a young woman she truly had an adventurous spirit and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1954 with her best friend, Carol Ough! This was the beginning of her desire to see the world, especially once she was stationed in Metz, France. From there she explored most of Europe with her newfound comrades. She shared many of her misadventures assimilating to this new life experience and also earned the title and sash as Miss Radar 1956! It was during this time she met and married David Redmond in 1958. The marriage only lasted 14 years but during this time, they had three children. Shannon who was born in Zweibrucken, Germany, Thomas (Tom) born in Brampton, ON and Kevin who was born in Quebec.
She found a supportive partner in her common-law relationship with Art Dixon for 18 years. Mom faced many challenges in the years that followed but in 1981 her life turned around for the better when she gave her heart to Jesus and let God into her life. She was dedicated whole heartedly to her deep faith which carried her through to the end of her life. Mom lived the past 33 years with her daughter Shannon & Gary Cresswell. Gary would often share that he married one woman and ended up with two!
In her younger years she worked at Northern Electric (Telecom) in Brampton and later became a Red Cross Homemaker. Joan loved helping people and had a gentle, fun loving and encouraging way with her clients. As she got older, she decided to work as a Crossing Guard for the Region of Peel. Mom held this position at the corner of Hansen Rd & Vodden St in Brampton for 20 years! Mom loved the children she crossed often bringing them treats. Many would return as adults with their own children years later and spoke highly of her care and concern for their safety.
Joan leaves behind her three children Shannon Cresswell (Gary), Tom Redmond (Karen), Kevin Redmond (Rebekah) and six grandchildren Joshua (Malin), Daniel (Kristina), Eric (Rachel), Marcus, Amanda (Daniel) and Genevieve. Life would continue to bless her with seven great grandchildren. Charlotte, Penelope, Preston, David, Michael, Jacob and Theodore. She was also very fond of her sister Gwen’s daughter, Vicki who spent many years vacationing and spending family time together.
She loved the Lord with all her heart and is now at peace in His presence. Thanks Mom for all your love, we will cherish all the memories, the laughter and your frank and honest ways until we meet again!
Funeral Service will be held at Drury Funeral Centre on Thursday, October 16th with Visitation from 1 p.m. until time of Service at 2 p.m. If so desired, memorial donations to Stevenson Memorial Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
