Joan Anne (Ramsay) Macfie passed away peacefully at the West Parry Sound Health Centre on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Age 95.
Born in Parry Sound, daughter of the late Robert and Margaret (Spearpoint) Ramsay. Sister of the late Douglas. Beloved wife of the late John Macfie. Loving mother of Robert (Alicen), Elizabeth (Paul) and Ian (Ninfa). Dear Grandma of Stuart, Ramsay, Emilie, John and Margaret. Great friend of Lorie Latimer (Tudhope). Fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Joan Macfie was a notable, though diminutive figure in the Parry Sound area through most of her 95 years. She was a skillful, loving homemaker, wife, and mother to three children, and grandmother to their offspring. She was also a graduate of Shaw’s Business College of Toronto, serving as office staff at the Department of Lands and Forests in Parry Sound, as well as a part-time office administrator for the night school program at Parry Sound High School. Her time at the Lands and Forests provided her with the opportunity to meet her future husband and life partner, John Alvin Macfie.
Joan would enjoy many adventures in her life with John, travelling to live in various Northern Ontario communities where his job as a wildlife manager took him, and then a rich itinerary of travel adventures which they took through vacation time and retirement years. Joan served the community through involvement in such charitable ventures as quilting fundraising for the local hospital, and volunteering with the used clothing store at the United Church. She had many friends in the area from her school years until her years of retirement. She was a great conversationalist, especially as a living encyclopedia of local social history, and was known to enliven social events with her engaging banter. In her youth, she was reputed to be tremendous in the dance genre of the jitterbug.
Friends will be received at the Logan Funeral Home, 81 James St., Parry Sound (705-746-5855), for a Memorial Visitation on Sunday, January 26th, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery in the spring.
