Joan Loretta Francis Obituary
After a life filled with 90 years of love, our mother’s journey came to a peaceful close in her home, surrounded by family on November 1, 2025.
November 1st holds a special place within our extended family’s hearts. 70 years ago, to the day her mother tragically died in the first act of sabotage against a US commercial aircraft, United Flight 629. She lost her mother at age 20 and willingly raised her 4 younger siblings.
She leaves to mourn with love, a family who adored her, daughters Karen Francis, Pam (Carlos) Cerqueira; grandson Brent Cerqueira; fur grand-babies Patches & Sebastian; sister Shirley Rinn; sister cousins Barb Dawson, Patsy Kennedy; many nieces and nephews.
Joan was born and raised in St. John’s, third of 7 siblings. Predeceased by her parents Charles and Alma Winsor; husband Cyril (Bud) Francis of 51 years; infant son and grandson Kyle Cerqueira; siblings Marge, Bernice, Betty, Charlie and Cyril.
Known for her loving heart, Joan cared for countless children through her home daycare. She played a role in giving so many little ones a great start in life with all the care she provided. She also welcomed students as they pursued their studies in St. John’s providing them with a home away from home. Her warmth, generosity and steady presence left an enduring mark on every life she touched.
Our deepest gratitude to the dedicated professionals, who cared for mom with kindness, dignity and respect. Your compassion will never be forgotten. We would like to thank the team at the Home Dementia Program, especially Dr. Roger Butler, Nurse Practitioner Mary Beresford, and Community Health Nurse Jennifer Quinton. To her many caregivers throughout the last 5 years, you are all angels and will forever hold a special place in our hearts. A special thank you to her friend and caregiver Darlene Vincer for the last 3 years. You treated our mother like your own. We are forever grateful, and happy to have a 3rd sister in our family. To Karen’s work family at Compounding Wellness, thank you for all your love and support.
Joan’s love and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Though she is gone from our sight, she will never be forgotten.
“Oh dear what can the matter be, 3 old ladies were locked in a lavatory…”
