Joan Elaine Baker Obituary
Joan Elaine Baker passed away peacefully surrounded by love and in the comfort of her home on January 9, 2025.
Born in Port Colborne to Alex and Ann Winn, sister to Sharon (Matesic), wife to Bob Baker, mother to Susan (Robert), Judy and John, grandmother to Alex (Nicole), Sara (Chris) and Ella and great-grandmother to Benjamin (born Nov. 2024 and in Joan’s arms at Christmas). Joan passed as she lived – at the heart of the family she nurtured and supported all her life.
Joan’s early career in nursing led to many lifetime friendships and fond memories of travel before starting a family with Bob. She was a keen cook and baker and she loved nothing more than hosting friends, family, and members of the Port Colborne Baptist Church, where she was active in Ladies Aid and overseeing the Sunday morning nursery. Her favourite past times were boating and travel with Bob, taking her kids water skiing and skating, and hosting countless gatherings with family and friends, filled with laughter and jokes, while everyone enjoyed one of her delightful meals. Her spirit lives in all of us and she will be toasted at many dinners to come.
After Bob’s passing (in 2021) she lived a quiet and peaceful life, remaining in her lakeside home until the end, enjoying the view of Gravelly Bay and her beloved purple martin houses. Raising and removing those martin houses became a family tradition that spanned four generations, always done with much care to ensure a successful flock of martins every spring.
Joan was fortunate to have the support of her sister Sharon, friends, neighbours and her caregiver Sarah Sharpe who she bonded with over trips to Dairy Queen and episodes of Downton Abbey. Joan devoted herself to the church and to her family and passed away knowing that she had lived life completely. Remembered with gratitude and love by friends and family, she left a wonderful example for us all.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at the Port Colborne Baptist Church, 84 Ridgewood Avenue, Port Colborne. Visitation from 11 a.m. followed by a service at 12:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church.
