Obituary of Jewel Spencer
SPENCER, Elma Jewel peacefully at Lee Manor Nursing Home, Owen Sound early Saturday, May 10, 2025. Jewel Spencer (nee Gates) of Shallow Lake in her 92nd year. Beloved wife of the late Sheldon Spencer. Cherished mother of the late Randy Spencer (2021) and Lynn and her husband Juan Carlos Taborda of Shallow Lake. Much loved grandmother of Kaden, Keenan, Kyra, Camila (Mark) and Diego. Dear sister-in-law of Carol Gates and Mel Spencer (Pat). Predeceased by parents Esther (nee Matches) and Harry George Gates, brother Glenn and in-laws Fred Spencer (Elda) and Margaret Wardell (Jim).
On the morning of her beloved son’s birthday, Jewel left her earthly home to walk into the arms of Jesus. She was a woman of faith, an incredible cook, and a friend to all who knew her. She loved her husband, children, and grandchildren with devotion and kindness. She loved her vegetable and flower gardens, as well as farming and she never met a cat or dog that she did not open her home to. Jewel enjoyed sewing, knitting, embracing art such as tole painting, ceramics, and calligraphy, and was known for her beautiful handwriting. Jewel was also the holder of her family’s genealogy, compiling detailed records of her family’s story. Always ready to lend a hand, she had a kind and gracious heart. Despite the loss of her husband many years ago, her son, her brother, in-laws in 2021, and various health concerns, she never complained. She was a survivor in the truest sense, and she did it with grace and love. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Lee Manor in Owen Sound. You are angels with hidden wings and you cared for Jewel like she was your own. Thank you will never seem enough.
Family and friends are invited to share memories at the DOWNS AND SON FUNERAL HOME, Hepworth on Wednesday, May 14th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.. The funeral service will be conducted from the Shallow Lake United Church on Thursday, May 15th at 2:00 p.m.. Interment Boyd Cemetery, Shallow Lake.
