Jean’s Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Helen Jean Wallace, announce her passing on Sunday January 5th, 2025 at the Dartmouth General Hospital at 91 years of age. We extend our most sincere appreciation to the staff of Dartmouth General Hospital 5-West Palliative Care Unit where Mum received exceptional support, care and love. Born in Little River, NS, she was a daughter of the late Ira and Annie (Mitchell) Black. Mum spent her life giving to others, starting as a little girl helping her mother in the kitchen where she gained her love of cooking, to teaching Art at the Pugwash District High School where she retired. Jean was also a member of the Pythian Sisters Cedar Temple No. 21. Jean and her husband Don ran the Leaside Bed & Breakfast in Oxford, Leaside Gallery and prior to moving to Halifax also the Leaside Dining Room where she loved to cook and serve many multi-course meals to guests from NS, NB & PEI. While in Oxford Jean hosted several foreign exchange students whom she grew very fond of and continued to share stories of for many years. This love of hosting students continued when she moved to Halifax where she hosted student Doctors which involved 3 of her favourite things, cooking, people and giving. In Jean’s spare time she was the author of 3 Friends and Family inspired cookbooks. Jean leaves a lasting legacy with The Jean Wallace Art Gallery which is part of the Pugwash District High School where over the years she assembled approx. 180 pieces of artwork for all to enjoy. Jean is survived by her son, Troy (Angela) Wallace of Lawrencetown, one sister Emma (Ed) Henderson of Little River, one brother Rufus (Florence) Black of Oxford, one sister-in-law Gloria Black of Litter River, as well as several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Jean was predeceased by her Husband of 39 years Don Wallace, son Todd Wallace, two sisters Neita Smith and Marjorie Victor, three brothers Shirley Black, Bert Black and John Black. A visitation to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 8 from 12-3 pm in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home & Crematorium. Burial service to follow at 3:30 pm in Birch Grove Cemetery, Little River. Donations in Jean’s memory may be made to the Birch Grove Cemetery, Canadian Cancer Society, Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice.
