Jean Kerr Obituary
Jean Ruth Kerr was born in 1936 in Banff, AB to parents James “Jim” Bagley and Ruth Bagley (Née: Verrnonwood). As a child she moved around a lot and often spent time with one or the other sets of grandparents. That was much preferred to living in Vancouver or Calgary as her grandparents lived on a farm or ranch with lots of animals. She moved to the Crowsnest Pass in 1952 to stay with her elderly grandparents Ray Bagley and Danny Bagely (Née: Swanson). She attended school in Coleman and spent her evenings and weekends milking cows, caring for horses, hauling wood for heating, and even put her hand to skidding logs by horse for the Kerr’s Chinook Cabins. It was in this endeavour that she met and was smitten by John “Jack” Kerr. It was mutual and Jack and Jean married in 1955. Jack and Jean had four children: James “Jim” Kerr, Doug (Susan) Kerr, Karan (Dave Ritchie) Spoelder and Carol (Terry) Ostrom.
Jack worked for East Kootenay Power and the family resided by the plant at Crowsnest Lake. When the plant shut down in February of 1969 Jean and family relocated, first to Fernie and then to Cranbrook in 1972, where she was actively involved the Nancy Greene League and competitive ski racing. Jean’s heart remained in the Crowsnest Pass and she pined for the day when she could return to the ranch in Sentinel. Unfortunately, just at Jack and Jean were prepared to return to the Crowsnest, Jack passed away. Being the strong independent woman she was, Jean forged ahead with their dream home, and she rejoined her heart in 1995 back on the home property. She built a large ranchouse where she loved to gather her family. She is blessed to be survived by all her children plus her eight grandchildren, Morgan Kerr, Gordon Kerr, Hollis Tozser, Zoe Grimston Kassandra Spoelder, John Spoelder Joshua Ostrom and Caleb Ostrom; and seven great-grandchildren, Chloe Tozser, Colt Tozser, Rhys Kerr, Nora Kerr, Campbell Grimston Abigail Grimston and London Jean Ostrom.
Jean never drifted from her passion for horses, and she continued to ride well into her seventies. When she returned to the Crowsnest in 1995 she replanted herself in the community through involvement with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Allied Arts, Writer’s Group and Toast Masters. In the winter months she could be found on the Fernie ski hill. Jean was fiercely independent and raised her children to be the same. Jean continued to live on her own and travel the world until old age crept up and stole her independence.
She will be remembered for her love of the outdoors, the land, and nature. She took in any animal that needed nurturing. She raised both a crow and a wild duck. She had rabbits, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, pigs and horses. She loved them all.
She will be missed for her quick wit and sense of humour, her tenacity and ingenuity. She was never afraid to chart her own course according to her own conscience. She will be missed by a family who she cherished and loved to bring together. She will be missed although her legacy will live on. We will gather in her memory when the flowers are in bloom again.
