Jantje “Jean” Hoekstra
April 11, 1933 – January 10, 2025
Jean Hoekstra of Chatham passed away peacefully at the Riverview Gardens. Mom was born in the small village of Katlijk, Friesland, The Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1948 with her parents and siblings. She married Jack Hoekstra in 1957 and together they raised 3 children, Betty Herman, Paul (Teresa), and Rob (Helen). They enjoyed over 57 years of marriage before Dad’s passing in 2014. Jean was Beppe to 9 grandchildren; Jessica (Brian), Owen (Leslie), Evan; Sharon (Dave), Dan (Lindsay), Matt (Andrea), Kate (Alain); Joey (Christina), Rachel (Taylor); and 15 great-grandchildren. Jean is survived by her sisters, Mary DeVries (Herman), Tina Okkema (Harry), Liz Dragstra (John) and 2 brothers, Arnold (Margaret), Rusty (Bea), sister-in-law Janet and brother-in-law Henk Postma. Predeceased by siblings Harry (Jenny), Andrew (Margaret), Ted (Tina), Betty Vroom (Bill), Jeep (1 y.o.), Martha Sonneveld (Ben), Edward, and Joe (Susie Postma). Jean is survived by her in-laws; Grace and Albert Mast; Tina Verburg; Sarah and Henry Regts; Harry and Yvonne; Judy Vandendool; Janet Buck. Predeceased by Adrian Verburg, Jean and Andy Roorda, Effie and Elbert Forsten, Bert Vandendool and Wayne Buck. She will be missed by her lifelong friend, Suze Mast.
Thank you to the wonderful staff who took such good care of Mom these last months at Riverview Gardens and before that at Chatham Retirement Resort, it was so greatly appreciated.
Visitation for Jean will take place at First Christian Reformed Church, 25 Tweedsmuir Ave East, Chatham on Tuesday, January 14 from 6:30-8:30 pm. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 15 at 11:00 am and will be followed by a reception at the church.The service will be available by livestream.
