Obituary
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Janine Laura Demings, 75, of Pugwash on January 22, 2025. Born February 18, 1949, she was the eldest daughter of Clyde and Sue Scanlon.
Janine is survived by her husband, Jim Demings; daughter Michelle Hansen-Hillier, her husband Chris and their son, Jaxon (Timberlea); son Matt Hansen, wife Holly and daughters, Dakota and Kaylin (Pictou County); stepdaughter Shawna Demings-Pollard, husband Stephen and their sons, Josh and Noah: stepson Bryan Demings, wife Emily and daughter Kaylee; sisters Kelly Davey (Ken), Anita Bishop (Mark) and Linda Herst (Steve); beloved nieces and nephew. She was predeceased by her parents, Clyde and Sue Scanlon; brother,Tracy Scanlon;
Janine was a woman with a quick wit, a creative mind, a willingness to help others, and an unmistakable individuality. She was fiercely independent and self sufficient which could be seen in her many at home projects. Her legacy is one of pride in her family, love for her friends, and a deep affection for her animals.
During her childhood, Janine lived in Calgary and Churchill, and spent her formative teen years on the West Coast of British Columbia where she trained as a registered psychiatric nurse. She moved to the East Coast as a young adult and, shortly thereafter, began her twenty-seven year career as a supervisor and program director at Sunset Adult Residential Centre. While working as a registered nurse, she also ran Country Craft Weavers with her cherished friend and business partner, Marnie Brownell.
Janine was known to many as “an enigma within an enigma,” a phrase coined by her co-workers at Sunset. Proudly eccentric, she embraced life on her own terms, never shying away from her unique passions. Her beloved pets, Taz, Little One, and Sarah, were an inseparable part of her world. A friend once remarked, “If there’s such a thing as reincarnation, I’d want to come back as one of her pets,” and many would agree with that sentiment, as Janine showered her animals with unparalleled love and care.
A lifelong lover of music, Janine played the French horn as a young person and later enjoyed playing the guitar. She danced weekly for many years, and her spirit for life was truly contagious. One of her great joys was spending Sunday afternoons with Jim, sharing a meal, laughter, and memories that spanned many decades.
Her annual anniversary fishing trips out on the Green Witch, off the coast of Prince Edward Island, were a highlight of her year. She relished in the calm of the waters and the companionship of loved ones on those special trips.
Janine was an avid gardener who took great pride in cultivating her backyard and many gardens. Her artistic side shone through in her passion for painting, sewing, and weaving. Whether it was creating a beautiful piece of art, tending to her plants, or sharing a quiet afternoon with family, she always made time for the things that brought her peace and joy.
She had a fondness for hats and it was rare to see her without one perched atop her head. She was also a longtime member of the Red Hat Society, where she embraced the camaraderie and fun of women supporting women. Her love of baseball, biking, and cross-country skiing in her younger years showed her zest for life and adventure. But perhaps what she will be most remembered for was the warmth and traditions she brought to her Christmas gatherings.
She leaves behind a circle of family and friends who will forever treasure her memory and the special moments shared with her. Though Janine may no longer walk among us, her legacy of kindness, passion, and individuality will continue to inspire and guide us. We will miss her dearly but are comforted by the knowledge that she lived a full and meaningful life, true to herself until the very end.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-3 pm, Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Mundle’s Funeral Home, Pugwash.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Canada Foundation or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
