In his 93rd year, Jan died peacefully on Thursday December 19, 2024 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterloo.
Jan was a well-respected pastor of several congregations in the Reformed Church of America (Mississauga, Calgary, Brantford, Chatham), a cherished chaplain at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto and a Minister-in-Association at Aldershot Presbyterian Church in Burlington.
Jan/Daddy/Opa was the loving husband of the late Judith (Heeg) van Oostveen and Esther (Stientjes) van Oostveen. Loving father to JoAnne (Paul) Higgins, Roland (Patricia) van Oostveen, Stuart (Helen Ferrigan) van Oostveen, Connie (Trevor Bain) van Oostveen and Jon (Susan Horsfall) van Oostveen.
Beloved Opa to Rebekah (Greg) Donaldson, Rachel van Oostveen, Andrew (Kristen) Higgins, Karen Tsatchia, Jonathan (Danielle) van Oostveen, Thomas (Heather Skok) Higgins, Nathan Bain, David Bain, Charlotte Horsfall and Ella van Oostveen. Adored Great-Grandfather to Tessa, Kate, Esther, Flora, Owen and Aiden.
Loved brother of Roel (Ann) van Oostveen, Anna (Peter) Geene, Willie (Sergio) Ruiter, brother-in-law of Sue-Ann van Oostveen, Al DeVries, John (Wilma) Heeg, Annie (nee Heinen) Heeg, Harry (Grace) Heeg, Dick (Ruth) Heeg, and will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his sisters Ida De Gier, Corrie DeVries, and brothers Case, Kryn, Wynand and Wim van Oostveen.
Jan was a long-time member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, and resident of Columbia Forest Long Term Care home in Waterloo where he was renowned for his singing.
A service celebrating Jan’s life will take place on Monday February 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Erb and Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo. A reception will follow the service at the funeral home. A private family interment to take place earlier in the morning at Parkview Cemetery.
Many thanks to his caregivers over the years, especially most recently at St. Mary’s Hospital and at Columbia Forest LTC. We are grateful for your care.
