Obituary of James “Jimmy” Hosepian
Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at Grand River Hospital at the age of 83.
Jimmy was predeceased by his mother Hrepsemeh and his father Balig. He was predeceased by his loving sisters Anne Tokadjian and Alice Avedesian, brothers John and Michael Avedisian and brother-in-law Reg Avedesian. He is survived by nieces Cathy (Brian) Fogg, Diane Curtas, nephews Mark Avedesian and Aram (Tanya) Tokadjian. Jimmy also had great nieces and nephews, namely Brandon and Lauren Curtas, Jennifer and Jonathan Fogg and Anne Marie Tokadjian. He is survived by his lone remaining brother-in-law Sam Tokadjian.
Jim was born and raised in St. Catharines, Ontario and lived with his mother, father, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Around 1970, Jimmy began his career as a grade 8 core teacher specializing in History at MacGregor Senior Public School. He loved teaching and often talked passionately about ways he would engage learners and the pride he took in his craft. When he taught English, he was known to dress in character with a flowing cape, sword, and feathered cap. He also organized poetry cafes, dimming the lights and reading poetry by candlelight. Jim had a gift as a talented actor and used it creatively to enhance his teaching. Colleagues will remember his loud teaching voice, his appreciation for sporty cars, and his masterful editing of the school yearbook. In retirement, Jimmy continued to bring up the names of past students with whom he continued to communicate; a true indication that he was thought of highly by his students.
He loved to travel and ski, and was passionate about motorcycles. His social gatherings were always a highlight to anyone who attended. He loved to entertain, and he spent hours creating a landscaped oasis in his backyard. Jim loved a good party. He also loved Tuxedo cats, and will be missed by his current cat baby Mickey.
Sadly, Jimmy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer approximately 3.5 years ago. He battled bravely and persevered through several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. He fought until the end, always hopeful that a cure would come but to no avail. He had the support of family and friends but always wanted to be as independent as possible.
Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, March 3, 2025 from 11am – 12:45pm.
