James William Madden, 85,
of St. Andrews, passed away suddenly in St. Martha’s
Regional Hospital, on Saturday surrounded by his loving
family.
Born in
Pictou, he was a son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Hatt) and Andrew
Thomas Madden.
James was a
self-taught hard-working man. He took himself out
of school in grade 6 and put himself right into the work
force. In his early years he drove a pulp truck,
among other things, but spent much of his working life in the
construction industry as a loader
operator.
He was a
family man and lovingly raised his children with his late wife
Florence (Green) who he married in 1962. He adored his
grandchildren and was affectionately called” Old Papa” by
his great grandchildren.
James knew
tractors inside and out and really enjoyed taking them apart and
putting them together. It was one of his many interests that
earned him the reputation as the guy you go ask about how to fix, or
do, or find that thing. He loved to
tinker and got great pleasure maintaining his hobby farm.
James was a social guy and in retirement had his routine of jumping in
the truck to do his round of visits and he was always up for people
stopping in on him to bring him the news. “Sit down
now, you have lots of time” was always followed up with the offer
of tea and a cookie. James’ family are so grateful
for his good friends, Murray Teasdale, Paul Hemens, and Nick Ormand
who faithfully checked in on him when he was no longer able to be out
and about.
Considered a
man of steel by those who knew and loved him, he was also a man of
deep faith and appreciated visits from his parish priest when he was
no longer well enough to attend Sunday mass.
James is
survived by his children: Cindy (Dennis Stewart), Meadow Green; Helen
(AJ) MacLellan, Frasers Mills; Jimmy and Tommy, St. Andrews; grandson
Andrew, Halifax; granddaughter Ashley MacLellan (Chris Wright); Grande
Prairie; greatgrandchildren Lori, Lexi, and Lindi; sister Ethel Layes,
New Glasgow; many in-laws in his extended family, as well as numerous
nieces and nephews.
Besides his
wife, he was predeceased by sisters, Stella Fraser and Jessie Madden
as well as two sisters in infancy; brothers in law, Lawrence Layes and
Alex Fraser and good friend Doug Grace.
The family would like to extend
their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and nurses at St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital ICU and Emergency Departments; to
Dr Hendricks and Dr. McFarlane; to Dr Cudmore and staff; and to the
St. Andrews Volunteer Fire Department and the attending EHS
paramedics.
Visitation
will take place on Wednesday evening from 7pm-9pm in C.L. Curry
Funeral Home, 135 College St. Antigonish. Funeral Mass will
be held Thursday at 11:00am in St. Andrews Church, St.
Andrew’s. Reverend Danny MacDonald
presiding. Burial at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke or the St. Andrews
Parish Cemetery. Funeral arrangements
are under the direction of C.L. Curry Funeral Home,
