James “Jim” Harry Tope passed away Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at the Chatham Kent Health Alliance surrounded by family and friends. Born in Chatham, Jim was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Catherine Tope (nee Files). Jim was married to Shirley Tope (nee Buesnel) for 54 years. Jim will be sadly missed by his children Lisa Tope-Claspell (Randy Claspell) and Brian Tope (Amanda). Jim’s pride and joy were his granddaughters Emma, Addison, Caelyn, Jillian, Rose, and Paige. Jim was the youngest of 4 boys, he was predeceased by his eldest brother and sister in law, Raymond and Eleanor Tope. Jim is survived by his siblings Robert “Bob” and Cheryl Tope of Chatham, and Hugh and Marilyn Tope of Stoney Creek. Jim was the brother-in-law of Linda Logan of Sarnia, Barb and Clark MacAlpine of Fergus, Sheila and Jack Beintema of Ilderton, Nancy Packham of Blenheim, Carrie Phillips of Chatham, and Fred and Lisa Buesnel of Blenheim. Jim will also be missed by his closest friends, Gary and Judy Canniff. Jim will also be missed by many extended family members and friends.
Jim spent his working years in a factory, and in his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and getting together with friends. Jim was an avid golfer, he could join up with any group as he was very sociable. He always enjoyed a good laugh and enjoyed being in the company of jovial friends and watching comedy shows. His greatest joy was family, watching his children and grandchildren grow, and spending time together. Grandpa Jim could often be found at many Arenas, Softball Diamonds, and Dance or Music recitals watching his grandchildren in their interests and being their “Biggest Fan!” Jim enjoyed life and he could be quoted saying, “today is the first day of the rest of my life” and “do the best you can with what you have.”
Jim was very appreciative of the care he received over the years from Dr Leigh, and Dr S. Haig. Jim and his family would like to thank the staff and physicians at the CKHA ED, Medical floors and Continuing Care floors that provided exceptional care in his final days.
Visitation for Jim will take place Sunday, January 19, 2025, from 5:00-8:00 pm and Monday, January 20, 2025 from 10:00-11:00 am at Salvation Army Church (46 Orangewood Blvd, Chatham). Funeral to follow at 11:00 am at Salvation Army Church.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Jim’s name are asked to please consider the Canadian Breast Cancer Association or the Canadian Rheumatology Association.
