James Lawton Obituary
It is with profound sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of James Edward Lawton which occurred on January 16, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness. Born on June 23, 1942, in Saint John, NB, he was the son of the late Edward and Muriel Lawton (Lackey). He is survived by his devoted wife and best friend of 63 years, Roxie Ann Lawton (Nairn), his two adoring daughters Penny Lee Higdon (David) and Jill Ann Lawton- Forgey (Wayne) and his 5 grandchildren who he was extremely proud of and were the apple of his eye; Riley, Emma, Colin, Logan, and Reed. Jim was from a family of 10, and will be missed dearly by sisters, Carol, Jean, Darlene, Patsy, June, brothers Fred and Tim and special friend and nephew Rick. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his oldest sister Marjorie Boucher, and younger brother Rodney Lawton.
Jim lived life to the fullest, working and pursing many past times and interests. Jim was the original owner and President of James E Lawton Plumbing and Heating Company Limited. He was the Past president of the Master’s Plumbing licensing board, a member of the Mechanical Contractors Association, a member of the Plumbing Advisory Committee for the Department of Advanced Education and Training and a part time Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Instructor at Eastern Trade College.
Lending a hand and giving back to community was work that Jim treasured. He was past Master of Hibernia Lodge # 3 of free Masons, past President of Luxor Shriners Arab Patrol, past member of the Luxor Shriners Railway Unit and one of the original members of the NB Antique Auto Association.
All that knew Jim understood his passion for the outdoors, hunting and fishing fed his soul. He loved nothing more than a moose hunt or a day on the water casting a line. As a licensed Guide for Hunting and Fishing he proudly shared his knowledge of the woods with many. He was a past member of Ducks Unlimited, past President of Beaver Lake fishing club and an honorary lifetime member. He shared many wonderful hunting and fishing trips over the years with good friends, special mention to John, Rick, Winston, Joe and Bill.
Jim was a friend to all that knew him. It was his pleasure to spend time with family and friends at his summer cottage on the beautiful Belleisle Bay, always welcomed with something delicious cooking on the Barbecue. During his retirement years many fond memories were made vacationing and wintering in Florida. Jim drew everyone in when hosting Karaoke parties with a wonderful group of friends, he believed everyone had the ability to sing, he just had to find them the “right song”.
He will be dearly missed by his family and all that knew and loved him. The family would like to offer a sincere thank you to the Saint John Extra Mural Team for their care and support.
As per Jim’s wishes cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB. There will be no visitation, rather a planned Celebration of Life with family and friends at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Luxor Shriners Hospital for sick children or Romero House in Saint John, NB.
