James Canning Obituary
James Martin Canning met his out of left field, high risk cancer diagnosis on January 28 with a spirit and resolution many others would not have. He was determined to receive treatment, heal and ensure he made time for everyone he loved… and ring the bell at the Cancer Center.
So it is truly heartbreaking to announce his passing, which took place so shortly thereafter, February 11, 2025, at St. Clare’s in St. John’s from this untreatable condition at 46 years old.
Predeceased by his cherished father, Cletus. James meant the world to his wife, Jennah; his dear sister, Hannah; his brother-in-law on paper but brother by heart, Corey; and his devoted mother, Jane. Also feeling this intense loss are the Critch and Turpin families. Left behind to carry on his legacy is his faithful French Bulldog, Duncan.
He will be dearly missed by his large extended family of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, particularly Uncle Lawrence, Uncle Jerome, and cousins Calvin & Jennifer, who were thought of as siblings, as well as many friends who were thought of as family.
James had an idyllic childhood in Placentia surrounded by family and scallywag neighborhood friends. He attended Laval High School and graduated from Rothesay Netherwood School, & pursued higher education at Dalhousie, MUN, and CNA. He lived in Calgary for some time but returned to St. John’s in recent years. He loved his work as HSE Advisor, especially the work trips to Scotland and Norway with his treasured colleagues, and was proud of his contributions to the White Rose project with Cenovus.
James was many things to many people. He was an over-the-top Habs fan who shuffled at a snail’s pace, whether on or off the ice. Despite his efforts, he always took the worst pictures of his wife, but he made up for it by being a master nacho maker, doing his absolute best to stave off her hangry episodes. James was also a lover of concerts, travel, and spa days, and had an affinity for fine wine and scotch.
James had a heart of gold and always looked out for those who needed him. When he wasn’t playing hockey in his many leagues around town, or golfing with the boys, he was actively recruiting people to join him in the cult of CrossFit. He managed a holistic balance to this commitment of sports and fitness by eating lots of chippies and lounging with his bulldogs, watching sports highlights and Ru Paul’s Drag Race.
James was the number one guy in the group and a friend to all, even forming parasocial relationships with cast members of the reality shows he watched. As a son, brother, uncle, and husband, James never ceased to make this earth a better place. His light-hearted, kind nature and enduring heart will be remembered by all who encountered him.
Please picture James now, tossing a big stick into the water for his talented swimming English bulldog, Herman, who has no doubt been patiently waiting for him on the other side since 2023.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, Saturday March 1st, 2025 from 10 am – 2 pm.
Celebration of Life service to follow at 2 pm in the Barrett’s Funeral Home Chapel.
