James (Jim) Barclay was born on the 6th of May, 1937, in London, England. When World War II started in 1939, he and other children were taken and sent to Scotland by train with Government Officials. He was one and a half years old. The Government Officials brought him to his grandmother’s house where his grandmother, Linda Murphy, took care of him.
His father, James Barclay, was a fireman in London, England, during The Blitz when the Germans were bombing London, England. His mother, May Barclay, was a cook.
His parents became ill and left London, England, and went to Scotland in 1942. The war was still ongoing. His mother, May, died January 31, 1943. His father, James, died later that same year in October of 1943. Jim was orphaned at the age of five years old. The Germans were bombing the City of Glasgow, Scotland, at the time. Jim would often tell the story of how he would have to hide in the bunkers in the darkness when the sirens sounded.
While living in Scotland, Jim survived a serious motorcycle accident as a young man and spent about a year in the hospital recovering. Not only was he a fighter but such a hard worker as he worked tirelessly in the mines.
In 1984, James (Jim) Barclay moved to Canada and lived in the City of Toronto, Ontario, where he met and married the love of his life, Millie. They shared a love like no other. Jim worked for many years as a custodian for the company, Honeywell. There he developed strong friendships with his co-workers. He became a Canadian citizen in 1990. In the year 1999 he moved to the Town of Hare Bay, Newfoundland with his wife Millie. He loved Newfoundland because it reminded him so much of his beautiful Scotland. Jim and Millie would often say, I can’t believe that we are here. That this is our home. They were unbelievably happy.
The family would like to thank two very special people, Frances Glover and Jessie Wells, who have shown what true kindness, friendship, love and compassion really is. Over the years Jim always looked forward to seeing you both. It was truly the highlight of his day. To say he loved you both is an understatement. We, as a family, are eternally grateful.
The family would also like to express their most sincere gratitude and thanks to the 3rd floor doctors, nurses and staff at the James Paton Memorial Regional Health Centre for their exceptional care and compassion.
Visitation will be on Sunday, January 19th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Oram’s Funeral Home in Dover.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 20th, 2025, at 11:00 am from the United Church, Gambo. Interment will follow at the United Church Cemetery, Hare Bay.
