BURKEY, James Alexander
It is with tremendous sadness we announce the passing of James Alex Burkey (Alex) on May 15, 2025, at St. Anne Community & Nursing Care Centre, Arichat, N.S.
Born December 22,1931, in L’Ardoise, N.S, Alex was the son of the late Tranquil and Catherine Burkey, the oldest of their six children. Alex was a lifelong fisherman during summer months and worked as a yard gantry crane operator for over forty years in Halifax NS as a member of the Halifax Long Shoremen’s Association. His family remembers him as an exceptionally hard worker and provider for the family.
Alex is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 years, Alvina Elizabeth (Viny); five children: John, Bradley, Nadine, Darlene, and Charmaine; grandchildren: Candace, Evan, Emily, Brayden, Justin, Katlyn, Alex and Abagale; great-grandchildren: Ella, Finlay, Weston and Evangeline; siblings: Annie, Margaret, and Theresa.
Alex was pre-deceased by his parents, sister Gladys, brother Abraham and sons John and Darrell.
Alex was a man of many talents and surprises. He built the family home from lumber he sawed and was an avid hunter often telling the story of how that special riffle fetched him many deer over the years. He loved an intellectual conversation, especially about politics. His family has beautiful memories of him loading them all in his boat on a Sunday for a trip to St. Peters Island, teaching them to cook that perfect lobster, peel pulp, dry cod on the clothesline and his lead by example message to work hard and be strong throughout their journey in life.
In his retirement years he found great comfort in his drives to the shore to watch the fishing boats, his grand children, great grandchildren and best friends Lester and Gerard. He liked his drink and there were many spills and laughs when his children sat with him for a toast or snuck him a drink he was no longer permitted. He didn’t always express his feelings, but his family knew he loved them and was fiercely protective and proud of each one of them. He will be forever remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him especially the love of his life, Viny.
The family is forever grateful to Dr Samson, Dr Kingston Memorial Clinic and to his loving care givers Gladys, Tanya, Brenda, and the amazing staff of Strait Richmond Hospital and St. Anne Community and Nursing Care Centre.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at L’Ardoise Holy Guardian Angels Parish Visitation Parlour at 182 Chapel Cove Rd, L’Ardoise, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 from 6-8 pm. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Holy Guardian Angels Parish, L’Ardoise at 11am with Father John Yake officiating . Burial will take place at a later date.
Memorial donations can be made to the St. Anne’s Centre in Arichat.
