J. P. Robert Levesque
octobre 26, 1939 — février 16, 2025
Robert Levesque died peacefully in hospital, surrounded by love, on February 16, 2025.
Robert was born in Montreal on October 26, 1939, the first child of Ferdinand and Yvonne Levesque. He was predeceased by his mother, father, and younger brother, Yvon. Robert leaves to mourn his brother Pierre and nephew Julien, and his beloved wife of more than forty years, Karin Buchanan (“KB”). Karin’s family — brothers, Tom and Jim, sister, Marg, their partners, and ten nieces and nephews have become Robert’s family.
Robert and Karin believed that “families come in all shapes and sizes.” He appreciated his first family in Quebec, but firmly believed that chosen family members were a gift in life that few others are fortunate enough to experience.
Robert attended the Royal Military College in Saint-Jean, Quebec, then graduated from the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario with a degree in Industrial Engineering. On graduation, he was required to serve in the Canadian military for a minimum of three years. Robert served three years and one day. After, he worked for Standard Brands in Montreal, then was a pet food plant manager in Calgary. In 1974, he learned about a job at the Saskatchewan Research Council in Saskatoon. The rest is history. He met Karin, they married, and for many years, they travelled, went to foreign films, learned about wine and enjoyed time spent with friends. Robert liked all children, but came to deeply love a few. He even learned basic magic tricks for their sakes.
He spent many hours walking the dog, but many more, playing frisbee with the dog. He became a good cook with a limited repertoire at which he excelled. He cared about the colours and textures on the plate, not just the taste. He cooked like an engineer. He was very knowledgeable about investing and the stock market. He followed professional tennis and closely followed U.S. politics. After the last U.S. election, he said many times that he wasn’t sure that he wanted to live to witness the “complete collapse.”
Twenty years ago, Robert survived multiple cardiac arrests after playing squash. He was then nicknamed “Lazarus.” He was very aware that the last twenty years have been a gift.
Robert’s life can be honoured by simple acts of kindness, by laughing, by taking the time to say “Merci,” by sipping a good Cabernet Sauvignon, or playing with some cute kids.
Robert and Karin had many discussions about homelessness, especially in Saskatoon winter. His final hospitalization was a painful reminder of this problem. Robert’s coats, mitts, sweaters, ski pants (and a box of Little Hotties) have already been donated.
On March 23 (Robert and Karin’s 46th wedding anniversary), there will be an evening of wine, charcuterie, and memories at the St. Albert Community Centre, 610 Clarence Avenue South, Saskatoon, SK. Guests will be welcome beginning at 6:00 p.m. for appetizers, wine and visiting, and the program to celebrate memories of Robert will start at 7:00 p.m.
Charitable donations in Robert’s memory can be directed to any program dealing with homelessness. Some possibilities include: The Salvation Army – Saskatoon Indian Metis Friendship Centre – The Bridge on 20th – For further details, consult their respective websites.
