Ivan Michael (Mike) Weis, age 79 of Windsor Ontario, died Tuesday January 14th, 2025 after a serious illness.
Mike was born on May 21, 1945, in Harper Hospital (Detroit) to John Jacob Weis and Estelle Bette Rosenthal Weis Kushner. The family moved to Syracuse, New York where Mike grew up. He attended the University of Syracuse, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Iowa.
Mike joined the faculty of the University of Windsor, Biology Department in 1976 (retired 2012) as a population ecologist and was happy to have worked with many excellent graduate and undergraduate students. His research included sites in Western Iowa, Es County, Sanikiluaq and Baffin Island in Nunavut, and with peoples of Walpole Island and Chippewas-of-the-Thames First Nation.
Mike was passionate about classical music, live and recorded, and continued his long-running radio programme, “Twentieth Century Unlimited”, at CJAM after his retirement.
Mike was also an enthusiastic woodworker and dog-lover. He was a self-professed gourmand, enjoying new food experiences (especially those involving dark chocolate), and was a dedicated fan of Giglio’s Market’s hot Italian sausage.
Mike is survived by his daughters, Nary Weis (Bjorn Meir) and Katherine Needham (Darren Smith) and granddaughter Adelaide, and former spouse, Margaret Lawrence. He had many true friends in his lifetime.
Mike’s family sincerely thanks the staff of the 7th floor Windsor Regional Hospital (Ouellette Campus) and the staff at Dr. Y. Emara Building, Hôtel-Dieu Healthcare Palliative Programme, for their highly compassionate and diligent care.
