Obituary
Isobel Fraser Ramsay (nee Hemingway)
March 24, 1930 – Robroyson, Glasgow, Scotland
February 18, 2025 – Oakville, ON, Canada
Peacefully, on February 18th, Isobel left her devoted husband of 74 years, James (Jimmy), daughters Lesley Ramsay-Carnovale (Ralph d: 2021), and Sue Ramsay-Roddick (Gord), granddaughters Michelle Carnovale-Allison (Michael) and Gillian Carnovale, and deeply loved great grandchildren Marcus and Makayla, who adored her in return.
Other family members missing her are nephews in Scotland, England and Greece.
Isobel is predeceased by her father William Hemingway, Mother Isabella, brother William Hemingway and sister Alice Hamilton.
She married Jimmy, the love of her life, in August 1950, in Glasgow, Scotland and was a true partner to Jimmy, supporting him in his career and life.
In July, 1957 with 4 year old Lesley, she sailed from Greenock onboard the Fairsea joining Jimmy to start the next chapter of their lives in Lachine, Quebec. In 1958, daughter Susan was born, bringing more joy into Isobel’s life.
By 1965, Isobel supported her family’s move to Etobicoke, Ontario where she established a safe haven for her family to be welcomed home to.
Upon Jim’s retirement in 1993, she orchestrated the move to Oakville to be closer to her family.
Isobel excelled as a mother, teaching her daughters to live their lives with kindness gratitude and strength. Passing on her love of reading (“You can do anything if you can read”) and education to her daughters and in turn granddaughters and great- grandchildren through the annual eagerly anticipated Christmas gift-bags full of books, carefully chosen for each reader.
There are too many things to mention that made her such a positive influence on those around her – her sense of humour, sewing skills, her love for Girl Guides as a member and a Brown Owl (“Guiding helped make me who I am today”), music that welcomed you into her home, keeping her strong connection between her family in Canada and overseas , and so much more.
Thank you Isobel, for the love and devotion you gave us. You taught us to be thoughtful, generous of spirit, grateful, to respect our differences and enjoy learning about each other.
We remember you with love and gratitude for being our wife, Mum, Granny and Great-Granny.
Isobel loved her life in Canada but reserved a corner of her heart for Scotland. She asked that her ashes be scattered in the Highlands. This will be the family’s last gift to her.
The family suggests, in lieu of flowers (“Don’t send me flowers when I’m gone, but send them when I can enjoy them!”) that a donation to the Halton Learning Foundation which supports literacy and learning to honour Isobel’s life.
“Will ye no come back again?”
The family will receive guests on Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 5pm-7pm at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. West, Oakville, ON, L6K 1E1.
