It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of Isabel Sutherland on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the age of 92, at Hampton Terrace in Burlington.
Isabel was predeceased by her husband Hugh (1983) and by her son Kenneth (2017). She was the loving mother to Scott (Barbara), Craig (Kim) and Anne (Bill Cherney). She was a very special mother-in-law to Jill, Ken’s wife. She had 13 amazing grandchildren, Heather (Mark), Brodie, Andrew (Trish), Evan (Jasmine), Glendon (Joey), Brian (Elise), Blair (Alex), Mark (Alicia), Bryce (Shanique), Brenda, Gary (Kylee), Brad and Matt (Nikki). She was also blessed with 20 beautiful great-grandchildren whom she adored.
Isabel was born in Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to Canada at the age of 16 with her father Andrew, mother Annie and brother Jack. They lived on Hamilton Mountain and Mom would walk down Upper Wellington Street to catch the bus to her job at National Trust. It was at this time the red-haired, blue-eyed lassie caught the eye of Hugh, who was also living on the same street. Hugh and Isabel wed in 1953 and moved to Burlington where they set up roots and raised their family. They were faithful members of Wellington Square United Church and enjoyed many social activities with other church friends and family, in addition to bowling and yearly trips to visit Hugh’s family in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia.
After Hugh passed, Isabel lived a very independent life on her own for 42 years. She was a daily walker at Burlington Mall and logged thousands of miles over the years. It was here she met some wonderful friends and enjoyed many conversations over coffee with the gang. She also belonged to a bowling league and the Red Hats, and did some travelling – her favourite places being Greece and of course Scotland. She enjoyed doing crosswords, reading the newspaper to keep up with current events and making her own greeting cards, which became a full-time hobby for her.
She loved her grandchildren and did a lot of babysitting over the years. All the grandchildren have fond memories of the Christmas parties she would have at her house every year. She was so excited when her great-grandchildren started arriving and couldn’t wait to hold them on her lap and spoil them.
Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held in the spring at Greenwood Cemetery.
If desired, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
Many thanks to the staff at Hampton Terrace. Although her time there was short, you embraced her with open arms and surrounded her with care and love.
Forever in our hearts Mom, Grandma, GG. Just know that when you see a butterfly, she is just checking in on you.
