Bouctouche Bay, NB – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Joseph McDonough, 87, on Monday, January 6, 2025, at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Burton, NB, he was the son of the late Patrick Hilary Logue McDonough and the late Laura May Gilbert.
In his younger years, Arthur served in the Royal Canadian Navy and achieved the rank of Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he became a pharmacist. Along with the love of his life, Laura May (Née Bostick), they moved to Bouctouche in 1970, where they opened their first pharmacies in Richiboucto and Bouctouche, back then known as Kent Drugs Ltd (Guardian). He was the first licensed pharmacist in Kent County. Arthur was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed cooking for his family and always ensured nobody went hungry! He also found joy outdoors, spending countless hours caring for the horses at his stables. He enjoyed going on hunting trips, mostly with his son and sons-in-law. His hands, weathered by years of hard work, were always ready to help. His generosity and willingness to help others reflected his character – strong and reliable. He served his community until the retirement age of 80. He received numerous awards, including the Paul Harris Fellows Award, the Queen’s Jubilee medal, 2nd president of the NB Pharmacist Association, the Whitehall Robins Bowl of Hygeia award, the Meritorious Service Award to the profession, and the life membership of the NB Pharmacist Association, to name a few. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Laura May; his children: Kim Duggan (Dan Duce) of Fall River, NS, Arthur Bryan McDonough (Shelley McFadden) of Bouctouche Bay; Laura Lynn Hicks (Alan) of McKees Mills, and Hilary McDonough Smith (Jeff) of Bouctouche Bay; his brother Thomas (Sonny) McDonough of Burton; his sisters: Patricia Buyting (John) of Maugerville and Lucy Holland of Burton. His grandchildren: Kaitlin Stephens (Bradley), Ryan (Julia), Aislinn, Tristen, Liam, Caleigh, Mackinsey, Keaghan, Rileigh, and Aidan; his great-grandchildren Sophie, Perri, and Fallon, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Colleen Elizabeth, in infancy and a brother, Rev. Patrick George McDonough.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michelle Leblanc, Dr. Abdelsalam and his oncology team, Glenn Myers, Dr. Marcel Mallet, Dr. Eric Martin, and the Extra Mural team, especially Janie, Jenny, Monique, and Donelle. Le Phare Lisa and Janelle, nurse Viola Léger, the pharmacy staff at his stores, Dr Winkler, and all those who helped along this challenging journey.
Visitations will be held at Salon Passage-Maillet 29 Rue de l’Église, Bouctouche, NB, on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 7 pm to 9 pm and Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, from 9 to 10:45 followed by a funeral service at 11 am at l’Église Saint-Jean Baptiste de Bouctouche.
