Ian ANDERSON Obituary
Anderson, Ian Duncan Gordon
September 1, 1942 – April 25, 2025
Ian passed away peacefully on April 25, 2025 after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson’s. He is predeceased by his wife Sharon, daughter Bonnie, brother Bruce & survived by his daughter Cathy (Mick), grandchildren Brianne (Jace), Shane (Hayley), Travis, great grandsons Parker & Nash, brother Nigel (Leslie), nieces, nephews and many friends.
Ian graduated from Lord Bing and he played football & rugby at UBC; where he met the love of his life Sharon. They raised two daughters while he taught and coached football at Steveston for 28 years. He taught and coached for other schools after Steveston but his heart was always a Packer. After Sharon passed away he spent a few years coaching with Matt Phillips who he had played for and coached with at the beginning of his career. He felt it was a full circle and he loved it.
After retirement he & Sharon travelled about & wintered in Arizona; after her passing he continued to winter in Arizona until 2020. In 2021 Ian moved to the island where he enjoyed spending time with his great grandkids and being around his family daily. He passed on his love of exploring roads he’d never been on, a passion for books, a love for teaching and the value of family.
Ian was a dedicated and respected member of every community he belonged to. He participated in many things but is best known for his contribution to the football community. He dedicated the majority of his career to the Steveston Packers and had many players go on to play professionally; something he was very proud of. For his contributions he was was awarded the Builder Awards by BC Amateur Football Association in 1987 and was inducted into BC Football Hall of Fame as a Builder in 2013. He was made an honorary life member of the BC Football Officials Association, lifetime member of the BC Senior Secondary Football Association and in 1993 was presented the Richmond School District Bill Goodman Award.
We will miss his positive outlook, descriptive story telling, fantastic jokes, laughter and unconditional love. We were lucky to know him, be mentored by him and loved by him.
The family would like to thank the staff at Wexford Creek for the compassion and kindness they gave Ian. Especially the second floor staff who gave him exceptional love and care. We are eternally grateful for them.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cedar Community Hall in Cedar, BC June 13, 2025 from 1 – 4 pm.
Donations to a Parkinson’s charity, in lieu of flowers, are gratefully accepted.
