HOWELL, Marylou
May 7, 1934 — January 6, 2025
Marylou Howell (née Laatsch) was born in a farmhouse near Southey, Saskatchewan, the youngest of nine children to Nellie and Joseph Laatsch. She passed away on January 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, memories, and laughter along with a profound imprint on the hearts of all that knew her.
Marylou was predeceased by her beloved husband, George Howell, who passed away in 2005. She is survived by her four children -Timothy, Patrick, Scott, and Leisa. Marylou was a proud mother and grandmother; her family was the centre of her world.
Marylou’s journey took her across Canada and beyond. After completing her education in Saskatoon, she became a teacher and soon moved to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, where she met George, the love of her life. The couple married in April 1956. Their life together was filled with adventure and change, as George’s career with the federal government took them from Saskatchewan to the Yukon, then to England, and eventually back to Canada. Their family grew as they made new homes in these diverse places.
Marylou’s role as a devoted wife and mother was always her priority, and she supported George in his various career paths, including his decision to become a helicopter pilot. Together, they raised their family in Whitehorse, where Marylou worked for Canada Immigration, and later in Fort McMurray, where she worked in real estate while George flew with Highland Helicopters. Eventually, the couple settled in Richmond, BC, before retiring to Kelowna.
After George’s passing, Marylou embraced new opportunities. She became an active member of the Red Hat Ladies, where she found strength and healing among a group of bold, joyful women. She also enjoyed singing in a choir and found companionship with a dear gentleman until his passing in 2021. Marylou’s community involvement and zest for life were evident in everything she did.
Marylou had a passionate love for sports, particularly softball, which she played into her fifties. She was both a dedicated coach and player, with many fond memories shared with her children and teammates. She earned recognition at the Western Canadian Championships as a member of her son’s ‘Masters’ team. Marylou was also an avid curling fan, participating in the sport in her youth and continuing to enjoy it on TV later in life.
Known for her quick wit and infectious laughter, Marylou was the first to laugh at herself. She was generous, kind-hearted, and always up for a game of cards—particularly Bridge, where she earned many prized crystal trophies. She cherished the little things in life and treasured the relationships she built along the way.
Her family and friends will fondly remember her for her impeccably styled hair and signature bold, red lipstick. She lived with sass, strength, and an undeniable flair for life, leaving behind indelible memories with those who knew and loved her.
Marylou is survived by her four children: Timothy (Jackie), Patrick (Bonnie), Scott, and Nancy Lisa ‘Leisa’, as well as eight grandchildren: Timothy’s children, Crystal and Adam; Patrick’s daughter, Melissa; Scott’s children, Donovan, Daylee, Afton, and Tatum; and Leisa’s daughter, Hayley. She also leaves behind many great-grandchildren, whom she sadly never had the opportunity to meet, but would have wanted to acknowledge with love. She is also survived by one dear brother, Ivan “Deeder” Laatsch.
You gave so much of yourself, and now it is time for you to rest. You are deeply loved, and your memory will live on in our hearts. With all our love, your family.
