The passing of Hollie Mavis Matthews (Parks) of Fredericton, NB, occurred on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at York Care Centre. Born on February 14, 1931 in California Settlement, NB, she was the daughter of the late Herschel and Eva (Hamilton) Parks. Hollie with her Canadian Air Force husband, William Malcolm Matthews (deceased 1990) lived in St. Hubert, Quebec, Chatham, New Brunswick, Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, Virton, Belgium, Marville, France, Rottweil, Baden-Baden & Lahr, Germany and spending much of their time travelling throughout Europe. Upon her return to Canada she spent several years working at base Gagetown living in Burton and after her husband’s passing moved to Fredericton to live with her children. Hollie worked mainly as a manager/administrator for various Canadian Military services in Europe and the Federal Government, and several years as youth coordinator for the Town of Oromocto . She spent several years as a volunteer at the Fredericton Anti-Poverty Organization and was a board member. One of Hollie’s greatest joys was getting together with her sisters and trading jokes and stories which always resulted in much laughter. They were well known for laughing ‘till they cried. She loved her five granddaughters deeply and spent as much time as possible with them and where again the atmosphere was endless joy and laughter.
Survived by two sons, Trevor Keith Matthews and Kevin William Matthews; Hollie lost her youngest son, Dwight Shane Matthews, to an automobile accident in 1998. She has five grandchildren and six great grandchildren; of her eight siblings, Hollie was predeceased by seven, and she is survived by youngest sister, June DeMerchant residing in Hamilton , ON . Hollie was blessed with a multitude nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their sincere and profound thanks to the staff and nurses, angels in disguise, of the York Care Centre, where she resided since 2013, for the care Hollie received over the past 12 years and the support shown to the family over the past few days.
