Helen M.
Petchey died on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in
Sackville New Brunswick.
As a child Helen moved from her
birthplace, Plaster Rock, New Brunswick to Dorchester with her late
parents, Frederick and Marion Petchey, as well as her late sister
Dorcas (Petchey) Cuthbert.
Helen graduated from Dorchester Superior
School in 1939. She held two degrees in Arts and Education from The
University of New Brunswick and as a Beaverbrook Scholar, she
completed a Certificate in Education at London University, England in
1959 – 60.
Upon retirement, as an inspirational
teacher and librarian in the Saint John area, she moved to Sackville,
where as a Life Member of the Westmorland Historical Society, she
embarked on a second career as an author.
Meticulously researched and illustrated,
her many books preserve the history of Dorchester and area. She
presented her research at the Loyalist Society in Saint John and at
the Yorkshire 2000 symposium.
In recognition of her work she received
the American Association for State and Local History, Award for
Excellence (1993), the Key to the Village of Dorchester (2001) and the
Dorchester Memorial Library Literary Award (2011).
Helen has had a good life celebrating
her faith, being true to family and friends, serving her community and
doing those things that have given her life meaning. She loved travel,
research, writing her many history books and being both an educator
and a celebrated historian. One hundred and two years of service
should be a life celebrated and not mourned. Rest easy Aunt
Helen.
Helen leaves her niece, Catherine
(Cathy) Cuthbert of Kanata ON.
