1918 – 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we have said goodbye to our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, the last of her generation, Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Smith at Harmony Care Cottage, Red Deer, Alberta on Monday February 17, 2025 at the age of 106 years.
Helen was born on August 22, 1918, on a homestead near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan where she loved riding horses and being outdoors. She was always a very active person, an avid curler, golfer, and gardener. She took up downhill and cross-country skiing in her late fifties. A member of many bridge clubs, she and Sid enjoyed an active social life in Drumheller, while raising their children. Helen moved to Red Deer when she was eighty to be closer to family and started another chapter of her life.
The most important thing was family, and time spent with her grandchildren, the most precious. She was a good cook and knitter of sweaters; she loved long walks and berry picking. Our family is grateful to her for our beloved cabin at Crimson Lake, where we have all made wonderful memories and where Helen was the happiest.
Helen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Kerry (Vicki), Rodney (Brenda), and Susan (Robert), her nine grandchildren and her eight great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Sidney K. Smith, her son, Douglas Smith and his wife, Darlene, and her granddaughter, Kaley Smith. We would like to extend many thanks to the wonderful staff at Harmony Care Cottage where Mom spent her final years and received exceptional care.
