With great sadness we announce the passing of August Joseph Jacek; who died peacefully at age 93 on March 5, 2025, at St. Paul’s Hospital in the Palliative Care Unit.
Gus is survived by his daughters Nora Jacek, of Saskatoon, Carolyn Hutchison (nee: Jacek) and granddaughter Faye Hutchison, both of Sidney, BC., sister Sarah O’Gorman (nee: Deeks)(Ed) and niece Kate O’Gorman (Darren) of Saskatoon, and nephew Ryan and his children, of Alberta. Gus is predeceased by his beloved wife Jean, his parents Joseph and Agatha Jacek, his brother Ted Jacek, and his sister Madeleine Erikson (nee: Jacek). Gus was the oldest living patriarch of an extensive family, with many aunts, uncles and cousins, both surviving and deceased, who are too numerous to list here.
Gus was born and raised on the prairies. He grew up on a farm near Allan, SK, in close proximity to his cousins, uncles and aunts. This is where the importance of family and helping neighbours began. He developed a love and devotion to family that lasted his entire life. Even after his parents moved the family into Saskatoon when Gus was young, he would go back to spend summers working on his uncles’ farms. This was where Gus learned to fix everything from farm machinery and cars, to appliances, etc. Gus worked many odd jobs through high school to help support his widowed mother and siblings. It was during this time that he met Jean (nee: Bateman) at a high school dance. She soon became the love of his life and they married after a long courtship.
Gus was a highly skilled carpenter. He worked for a local company building houses in Saskatoon, a few of which still exist on Aird Street today. He could build anything and was truly a skilled craftsman. Gus eventually accepted a job in the petroleum industry as he wanted to provide more security for his family. Over the years he worked for a few different companies including British American Oil, Gulf Canada, and PetroCanada. He worked hard and made his way from bulk salesman, to manager, to area manager, to sales consultant, until his so-called retirement, when he worked as a valued consultant for Moose Jaw Asphalt.
When he was not working, Gus enjoyed woodworking, sailing, horseback riding, golfing, curling, bowling, and following hockey and CFL football. He and Jean were keen members of both square and round dance clubs and they travelled with these groups to dance in many different countries. They made many friends and memories along the way.
Gus was a member of the Saskatchewan Woodturners and the Saskatchewan Woodworkers Guilds. He put his carpentry and building skills to good use after he and Jean bought a lot at Candle Lake, SK. Gus cleared the lot and built the family’s cabin from the footings to the roof. Jean and daughters Nora and Carolyn were his assistants and many hours were spent working on the cabin. Much fun was also had canoeing or sailing on the lake, visiting neighbors, playing cribbage or cards, and sitting around the campfire. The lake was Gus’s “happy place” and he loved to spend time there.
Gus and Jean celebrated 64 years of marriage together. Gus always looked after his family. For the last 6 years of Jean’s life, Gus visited her every day at the care home, spending time with her and caring for her needs. To the care aides there, he was referred to as Jean’s “prince”.
Gus was devoted to his Christian faith. A member of a church congregation in every city he lived in, he contributed by teaching Sunday school, serving on vestries, and was a former treasurer at St. John’s Cathedral in Saskatoon. He was a generous and giving person, always willing to help others with his time, knowledge, and expertise; as well as donating to various charities, hospital foundations, and to his church.
Gus’s ashes were interred at the Columbarium in St. John’s Cathedral, Saskatoon where he now rests beside his beloved wife Jean. A Celebration of Gus’s life will be held at St. John’s Cathedral in August of 2025, the date will be announced in a future edition of this newspaper. Those who knew Gus are invited to submit a story or anecdote to be included in a memory book for the family prior to August 1, 2025. Submissions may be sent to momentumwhippets@icloud.com.
